Charging Tesla Version 4 Folding Unit supercharger cabinet and posts at the Columbia, South Carolina site
Branden Flasch

Tesla's New V4 Supercharger Ships Flat on a Trailer and Unfolds on Site. First Look at the Real V4 Cabinet.

Branden Flasch visits one of the first Tesla V4 cabinet supercharger sites in the world, also the first using the new Folding Unit design, in Columbia, South Carolina. The FU name is not a joke: the eight-post array is a single metal frame that folds flat for shipping, gets craned onto a pad, and is ready to charge once the AC feed is connected. The cabinet is rated at 997 kVA with 960 kW DC output, and each post handles 615 amps continuous. Flasch charges his F-150 Lightning via a CCS adapter and sees 178 kW at 35% state of charge, then walks the full site from the transformer to the cooling system on each post and the ADA loop handle design.
Reviews Aptera three-wheeled solar electric vehicle being driven on a public road during MKBHD first drive
MKBHD

If You Missed MKBHD's First Drive of the Aptera, Here Is Your Second Chance. It Is a Lot to Take In.

The Aptera is a three-wheeled autocycle registered as a motorcycle, though a regular license is all you need. A 41 kWh battery and solar panels covering the roof, nose, trunk, and dashboard are claimed to deliver 400 miles of range with up to 40 free miles per day from the sun. Starting at $35,000 with around 50,000 pre-orders, MKBHD drove a pre-production prototype in 2025. The door opens via a secret knock, every function from windows to park and drive runs through the touchscreen, and the dashboard solar panel creates a genuinely dangerous glare at certain sun angles. It drives and merges on highways without drama. In 2025, that was far from guaranteed.
Deep Dives Tela the avalanche rescue dog with handler Danny Skilling on the slopes of Big Sky, Montana
Rivian

Meet Tela, Big Sky's Avalanche Rescue Dog. The Rivian Is in There Too, Somewhere.

Danny Skilling runs the avalanche rescue dog program for Big Sky Ski Patrol in Montana, and Tela has been his partner her whole working life. Every day on Lone Mountain involves obedience drills, simulated burial searches, and working around explosives in one of the most demanding high-alpine environments in the country. This is a Rivian brand film, so yes, there is a Rivian in it. But mostly it is a short film about a working dog and the person she shows up for every single day.
Battery Tech 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid on a highway during a full discharge battery capacity test by Out of Spec Reviews
Out of Spec Reviews

This Model S Plaid Lost 13% of Its Battery in Under 60,000 Miles. The Owner Stored It Perfectly.

Out of Spec Reviews drove a 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid from 100% to complete shutdown after four years and 57,000 miles. The car was stored at 50% state of charge in a climate-controlled garage almost the entire time. Result: 86.3 kWh extracted against a baseline of roughly 99 kWh usable when new. That is 87% energy retention and a 13% capacity loss, confirmed by the factory Tesla battery health test. In practice, a car that once did 300-plus highway miles now reliably does around 200. The NCA cell chemistry in this generation of Model S is documented in fleet data as degrading faster than the NCM cells in the Model 3. The video also covers why long-term low SOC storage carries its own balancing risks.
Reviews Hyundai ELEXIO electric SUV on the road during CarSauce Australia review, showing the front design and aero wheels
CarSauce

Hyundai's New EV Is Made in China, Runs on a BYD Battery, and Costs $59,990. Australia Just Got Interesting.

The Hyundai ELEXIO is built in China by Beijing Hyundai, uses an 88.1 kWh LFP battery sourced from BYD, and arrives in Australia at $59,990 drive-away. It has a 160 kW front-wheel-drive motor, up to 546 km of WLTP range, and a 27-inch center display that takes about 20 minutes to stop feeling strange. CarSauce's verdict: genuinely nice to drive, excellent rear legroom, adjustable seat bolsters you won't find in most Hyundais. The real-world efficiency hovers around 20 kWh/100 km, which is not impressive for the size of that battery. No heat pump either. But at that price it is hard to argue with the package, and Hyundai Australia would be wise not to raise it.
Reviews BYD Sealion 8 and Tesla Model Y L side by side during CarSauce Australia comparison review
CarSauce

BYD Sealion 8 vs Tesla Model Y L: The Plug-in Hybrid Beat the Full EV in a Fight About Everything That Actually Matters to Families

The BYD Sealion 8 is a seven-seat plug-in hybrid with air suspension, three rows of proper adult seating, massage seats, and 359 kW. The Tesla Model Y L is a stretched six-seat full EV with 378 kW, a massive frunk, and real-world range around 663 km. Both made in China. Both fast, the Tesla winning the drag race to 100 km/h by exactly 0.04 seconds. But CarSauce gave the overall win to the BYD, calling the interior more luxurious, the ride softer, and the third row an actual place to sit. At $81,000 drive-away versus $76,000, the Tesla is pricier, skips the heat pump, and has a turning circle that will wear you out in a car park.
Solar & Renewables Jason Chang, 7th grader from Worcester, demonstrating his gravity-powered solar panel tracker built from recycled parts for under $25
WBZ News

A 7th Grader Built a Solar Tracker for Under $25. No Motor, No Electricity. Just Water, a Seesaw, and Gravity.

Jason Chang from Worcester is a 7th grader who noticed that solar panels sit fixed while the sun moves and wondered if he could fix that cheaply. His answer was a gravity-fed water system that slowly shifts weight to tilt the panel toward the sun throughout the day. Total cost: under $25 in recycled parts. Claimed efficiency gain: 20% over a static mount. It just won him a national STEM championship and a trip to Washington, D.C. to present. There is something genuinely good about a $25 idea that could be useful in places where a $500 motor is not an option.
News France 24 business news coverage of oil market volatility from the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz crisis
France 24

Oil Hit $120 a Barrel. Countries That Had Invested in Renewables Are Watching the Crisis With a Lot Less Panic.

France 24 breaks down the oil market fallout from the Iran war, with Brent having peaked near $120 before pulling back under $98 on peace plan hopes. Fifteen minutes before Trump's Truth Social post announcing a de-escalation, a massive volume of oil contracts changed hands, dropping the price 14%. French authorities are calling it suspicious. Meanwhile, France's finance minister warned of a new systemic oil shock with growth forecasts cut to near zero. China, which expanded solar and wind dramatically, is far better insulated. IRENA data shows over 90% of new green power projects were cheaper than fossil fuels in 2024. The energy transition argument just got a very loud data point.
Charging IONNA CEO Seth Cutler on the Motor Trend Inevitable podcast discussing the charging network reaching 100 sites
Motor Trend

IONNA Just Hit 100 Charging Sites. They Built the Whole Network From Scratch in Two Years.

Motor Trend's Inevitable podcast sits down with IONNA CEO Seth Cutler, who started as employee number one in an empty Honda office in February 2024. Two years later, the eight-automaker joint venture has crossed 100 sites with canopies, bathrooms, and Amazon Just Walk Out stores. No app required. Just plug in or tap your credit card. Discount charging programs are rolling out now for all eight partner brands. Their first site? A 100-year-old gas station where crews found a buried fuel tank during construction. They got it live in nine months anyway.
Battery Tech Comparison of LFP and NMC EV battery chemistries covering lifespan, winter performance, and long-term cost
Battery Bound

LFP or NMC? The Battery Decision Most EV Buyers Never Think About Until It's Too Late.

Most people hear "LFP lasts longer" and stop there. This video breaks down why that is only part of the story. NMC holds up better in cold weather. LFP can be charged to 100% daily without stress. And an LFP car with 420 km of rated range charged to full may give you more usable daily range than a 500 km NMC car you keep between 20 and 80 percent. Factor in insurance risk, replacement costs, and resale psychology, and the "best" battery depends entirely on how you actually use your car.
Battery Tech Just Have a Think breaks down new research showing sodium-ion battery performance can rival lithium-ion with improved electrode engineering
Just Have a Think

Sodium-Ion Batteries Were Supposed to Be the Budget Option. Two New Studies Say Hold On a Second.

Everybody assumed sodium-ion could never compete with lithium on performance because sodium ions are bigger, heavier, and slower. Turns out the ions were fine. The electrodes were the bottleneck. Research from Tokyo University of Science and Germany's Federal Institute for Materials Research shows that fixing how hard carbon anodes are built lets sodium charge at rates comparable to lithium in graphite. CATL is already putting sodium-ion cells in passenger cars. BYD is accelerating development. The chemistry was always capable. We just needed better engineering around it.
Reviews McMurtry Spéirling electric fan car on the Top Gear test track being reviewed by Ollie Marriage
Top Gear

1,000 HP, 1,000 KG, and a Giant Vacuum Cleaner Underneath. Top Gear Drives the McMurtry Spéirling.

In case you missed this one, clear your Sunday schedule. Ollie Marriage from Top Gear straps into the McMurtry Spéirling, a tiny single-seat electric car that generates 2,000 kg of downforce from a standstill using twin fans spinning at 23,000 RPM. It hit 60 mph in 1.38 seconds, reached 100 in 2.61, and left a Porsche GT3 RS looking like it was parked. Three fan modes mimic GT3, LMP1, and F1 grip levels. Ollie called it a cheat code. He also admitted to getting tunnel vision from the g-forces. It is adorable, terrifying, and the most fun you will have watching a car review today.
News Tesla Cybercab spotted driving without a steering wheel on public roads in San Francisco
Ryan Shaw

Cybercabs Are Showing Up Everywhere, Elon Is Teasing a Mystery Vehicle, and Sony's 'PlayStation Car' Just Died

A packed week in Tesla and EV news. Cybercabs have been spotted driverless in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Oklahoma City. A robotaxi staging lot full of Model Ys turned up in Dallas. The Cybercab has a clever new door handle that solves a real safety problem with emergency exits. Elon teased a new vehicle larger than the Model Y. The Tesla Semi made it onto Jay Leno's Garage. Uber put $1.25 billion into Rivian for autonomous R2 robotaxis. And Sony and Honda officially killed the Afeela weeks before its first customer deliveries. That's not even the full list.
Reviews Porsche Cayenne Electric Turbo being driven on wet mountain roads in Barcelona, Spain during a review by Miles Somerville
MKBHD Inc

A 1,100 HP Electric Porsche in the Spanish Mountains. Miles Somerville Says It Might Be the Best SUV He's Ever Driven.

Miles Somerville from the MKBHD team got seat time in both the Cayenne Electric Turbo and the standard model on wet mountain roads outside Barcelona. The Turbo makes over 1,100 horsepower in launch mode, hits 60 in 2.3 seconds, and nearly cracks a sub-10 quarter mile. But the real story is Porsche's active ride suspension, which kills body roll and makes a 6,000-pound SUV feel composed through tight switchbacks. The base model runs about $120,000 optioned out and is arguably the smarter buy. The Turbo sits near $230,000. Miles admits it's probably too much car.

The first vehicle running on this system is the VW ID.EVERY1. The milestone triggers another $1 billion investment from VW, split between $750 million in equity and $250 million in equity or convertible debt. VW has now put over $3 billion into Rivian through the partnership, with up to $5.8 billion possible if all targets are met.
Solar & Renewables DW News analysis of the global energy crisis triggered by the Iran conflict and the accelerating shift toward renewable energy
DW News

80% of the World's Energy Still Comes From Fossil Fuels. The Iran War Is Showing Exactly What That Means.

DW examines how the conflict with Iran has exposed just how fragile global energy systems really are. Twenty percent of the world's oil and LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Ten countries supply roughly 70% of global oil and gas. But there are real signs of a shift. In 2025, solar and wind provided more electricity to the EU grid than fossil fuels for the first time. Spain now gets 60% of its energy from renewables. Portugal ran entirely on green sources last year. The question is whether the transition can move fast enough.

Rivian's New 3D Configurator Is Genuinely Impressive. They Also Built the Whole Thing In-House.

Jose Castillo at Rivian Trackr spotted this one: Rivian quietly added a "View in 3D" mode to the R1 configurator. Spin the model, swap colors, change wheels in real time. Rivian's software lead Wassym confirmed it was built entirely in-house, which is not how most automakers do this. Most automakers outsource it. Rivian did not. R2 support is coming. You will lose 20 minutes to this and not regret it.
Solar & Renewables China's Luan solar farm in the desert, 6 million panels covering an area larger than 6,300 football pitches
YouTube

China Built a 6-Million-Panel Solar Farm in Two Years. Here Is What That Looks Like on the Ground.

Two years ago this was an empty stretch of land in Luan. Now it's 6 million solar panels across an area larger than 6,300 football pitches, producing 578 million kWh a year, enough to power 4.5 million homes. Drones patrol 12 times daily. The panels physically rotate to follow the sun. Next door, a wind turbine factory cranks out 800 units a year with blades up to 130 metres long. China now installs solar and wind capacity at the same rate as the rest of the world combined. The last number in the video, coal at 60% of Chinese electricity, is the one that sits with you afterward.

Reviews Polestar 4 on the road during a full review including highway pilot assist testing
YouTube

Polestar 4 Week-Long Review: No Rear Window, a Genuinely Nice Interior, and a Charging Port That Has No Business Being in a 2026 Car

The no-rear-window thing stops being weird within about 10 minutes. The J1772/CCS charge port on a 2026 vehicle never stops being weird. Swedish design, Google software, 100 kWh battery, 200 kW peak charging. Built in South Korea after 100% US tariffs made Chinese production economically impossible, even though 92% of the parts are still from China. That sentence perfectly captures where the auto industry is right now. Starts at $56,400. This test car stickered at $81,800. Pilot assist is solid on the highway. Lane changes are its villain origin story.

Deep Dives Northvolt battery factory in Sweden, site of Europe's largest battery manufacturing bankruptcy
Documentary

Europe Bet Everything on Northvolt. Here Is Exactly How That Went.

A documentary account of Northvolt's rise and collapse. Europe's largest battery manufacturer and its biggest bet on energy independence from Asia. Workers moved families to northern Sweden for a promised 500,000-battery-per-year operation. The company went bankrupt under billions in debt, driven by scrap rates so high that cells failed quality control faster than the factory could produce them. The aftermath: an American startup called Lyten acquired the assets, VW's PowerCo subsidiary is ramping up in Germany using Chinese machine expertise while retaining full IP ownership, and the EU has invested roughly €7 billion in the sector. For comparison, CATL spent the same amount on its Hungary plant alone. The gap is not closing quickly.
Reviews 2026 Subaru Uncharted electric crossover on a DC fast charger at night in South San Francisco
Ever / InsideEVs

Subaru Said the Uncharted Goes 10 to 80% in 28 Minutes. We Had a Stopwatch.

Andrew Lambrecht from Ever runs a cold-night charging test on the 2026 Subaru Uncharted in South San Francisco. The car uses the same 74.7 kWh NACS battery pack as the Solterra and Trail Seeker, accepts up to 150 kW DC, and Subaru claims a 28-minute 10-to-80% charge. After manually preconditioning for 25 minutes before plugging in, the Uncharted hit 80% in 26 minutes and 5 seconds, beating the manufacturer's claim. The charging curve held above 100 kW all the way to 67% state of charge, which is the kind of consistency that matters far more on a long road trip than peak figures alone. A genuinely solid result from a 400-volt platform.

The Solid-State Battery Company That Just Put 750 Miles on a Mercedes on a Single Charge

Monroe Live sits down with Raymond, VP of Business Development at Factorial Energy, to walk through the company's two platforms: FEST (a quasi-solid electrolyte built to slot into existing lithium-ion production lines) and Solstice (fully solid-state with a ceramic electrolyte stable to 200°C). The headline number: a modified Mercedes EQS drove 1,250 km on a single charge with range still remaining. Factorial's 100-amp-hour cells have reached 3,000 cycles in R&D, and their Gamatron digital twin can predict cycle life from as few as 10 to 15 cycles rather than waiting a year for the data. Partners include Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Hyundai/Kia. The target: production-ready cells in premium vehicles before 2030.

NMC vs LFP Battery Chemistry, Explained with Drink Bottles and a Dog Named Bindy

A refreshingly jargon-free breakdown of the two main battery chemistries you will encounter when buying an EV or a home battery. The short version: NMC is like a clear bottle where you can always see how full it is, LFP is a dark bottle where the only way to know it is full is to fill it to the top and peek in. That is why your LFP car tells you to charge to 100% regularly. It is not for the battery's benefit. It is for the battery's math. The actual verdict on which chemistry is better? Buy the car with the specs you need and stop worrying about it. Bindy the dog appears to agree, though she mostly wants dinner.

The new truck is 1,000 lbs lighter than the previous version, charges at 1.2 megawatts for 60% in 30 minutes, and costs roughly 50% less per mile to operate in California versus diesel. A few details worth noting: the standard range model has the same turning radius as a Model 3, heavy trucks make up just 1% of vehicles on the road but account for 16 to 18% of all fuel consumed, and Jay owns a 12-year-old McLaren P1 hybrid battery still sitting at 92%. That last one is not directly about the Semi, but it is a good number.

Long Way Up is the Apple TV+ series that quietly introduced Rivian to the world, and a lot of people still haven't seen it. In 2019, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode prototype Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycles 13,000 miles from the southern tip of Argentina to Los Angeles, with Rivian's first two pre-production R1T trucks running as the support convoy. Rivian installed 150 fast chargers along the route for the journey, a charging network that still serves those communities today. If you love EVs, adventure travel, or just great television, this one is essential viewing.

Solar & Renewables Power grid stability challenge from wind and solar explained with three engineering solutions
YouTube

The Grid Wasn't Built for Wind and Solar. Here Are Three Ways to Fix It.

Renewable energy's deeper problem isn't how much power it generates. It's how the grid stays stable when something goes wrong. Traditional power plants provide inherent rotational inertia, a natural buffer that buys time during disruptions. Wind and solar provide none. A mechanical engineer with 15 years of grid experience breaks down three practical fixes: grid-forming inverters, synchronous condensers, and battery energy storage systems.
Solar & Renewables Feldheim Germany off-grid renewable energy village with wind turbines and biogas plant
DW

One German Village Ditched the Grid Entirely. Here's Why It Worked and Why It Won't Scale Everywhere.

Feldheim, a tiny community outside Berlin, runs its own independent electricity and heating network and pays 12 cents per kilowatt hour while German averages hit 45 cents during the 2022 energy crisis. The model worked because of a tight-knit rural community, short transmission distances, available farmland, and a developer who kept locals in the loop from day one. Communication was the foundation. The same approach is genuinely difficult to replicate in larger or more fragmented communities, but as a proof of concept for small-scale rural renewable transitions, it is hard to ignore.

About the Curator

Jacob Hunka

Lifelong Sci-Fi geek. Dual US and Czech citizen living in Italy. For the last five years I helped manage and grow a worldwide remote team of 60 support representatives for a large online printing company. Other past lives include: former first mate on a racing yacht in St. Thomas, ESL teacher in Taipei, restaurant manager, and Level 1 Sommelier.

My path here hasn't been linear. It's taken me across oceans, classrooms, and a few unexpected careers, but one thread has always been there: a fascination with the future and how technology, energy, and transportation shape the world we're heading toward.

Today that curiosity shows up in a very tangible way: covering the rapidly changing world of electric vehicles, energy, and mobility.
