Plug-in solar is the idea that you should be able to buy a panel and a small battery, plug them into a wall socket, and cut your electricity bill without an installer, a roof, or planning permission. Germany has had it for years. France has had it for years. Australia, the video reports, bans it outright. And the UK, according to Artisan Electrics, is about to make it legal, with a proposed limit of 800 watts pushed into a socket circuit. The video was filmed at Intersolar in Munich, where Jordan from Artisan asked installers and creators from four countries what actually happens once the rules change. The answers turn out to be less about panels than about who is allowed to plug what into a socket. The cap is not as limiting as it sounds. The video explains that the panels can generate more than 800 watts, with the surplus going into a battery, and the system then drips no more than 800 watts back out into the house.

The people this is aimed at are the ones rooftop solar has never reached: renters, flat owners, anyone whose landlord will not let a drill near the roof. That framing matters more than the hardware, because the hardware is not the hard part. The US has already run a version of this experiment. Utah legalized plug-in solar as a plug-and-play appliance and then found that products struggled to reach shelves without a safety standard to certify them against, as we covered when the law passed. The UK is approaching the same junction from the other side. Artisan Electrics reports the government has opened a consultation and wants legality within months, while regulators work out how to do it safely. British electricians, the video says, are the ones worried, and that is not obstruction. A domestic socket circuit was designed to take power out of the wall, not push it back in. The 800 watt ceiling exists for precisely that reason, and it is why the video keeps returning to the question of whether an electrician should see the installation first.

The country-by-country reporting is the most useful part. A German creator tells Artisan that plug-in solar has been sold in Germany for over four years, that roughly 70 percent of systems now include storage, and that plugging into a standard household socket is technically not permitted but done by nearly everyone anyway. Jeremy, in France, says the market took off five or six years ago, that installations under 3,000 watts face essentially no regulation, and that exported power earns nothing, which is precisely why French buyers add batteries. In the Netherlands, the video reports, households now pay to export, so AC-coupled storage is being fitted quickly to push exports to zero. Vin from SolarQuotes says Australia bans plug-in solar and that the campaign there is for plug-in batteries for renters, since around 40 percent of Australian homes already have solar. On hardware, Artisan shows a stackable unit combining a 2.7 kWh battery and inverter with a 1.4 kW bidirectional charge and discharge rate. Expansion packs stack to a large total capacity, and sockets on the side mean the same box can go camping. The cheaper route, Artisan notes, is a micro-inverter: two or four solar inputs, a rating of 1,200 or 2,000 volt-amperes depending on the model, and a plug on the end. It works, and it stores nothing, which is why the video treats it as the least interesting option of the lot.

Bottom line: the UK will legalize this, and within two years the argument will not be about safety. It will be about export payments. Every country in this video that stopped paying for exported solar watched customers immediately buy batteries instead, which turned out better for the grid than anything a regulator designed. Britain still pays reasonably for export, so expect a wave of cheap panel-only kits first and a scramble for storage the moment that changes. If you rent, wait for the rules, then buy the battery before you buy the panel.
