Utah became the first state to pass a law making plug-in solar, sometimes called balcony solar, as easy to use as any household appliance, and KUTV 2 News found that almost nobody is using it yet. Bottom line: This is a rare case where the technology is ready and the paperwork is not. An 800-dollar kit that pays for itself in a couple of years is a genuinely compelling pitch for renters and anyone priced out of rooftop solar, and Utah deserves credit for going first. But a law that legalizes something no certified product can yet fill is only half a win. The thing to watch is whether UL's committee moves quickly, and whether the final standard keeps the electrician requirement, because that single line decides if plug-in solar stays niche or actually reaches store shelves.
