A brand new charging site in Mesquite, Nevada advertises four hundred kilowatts per cabinet. The car Scott Explains drove there peaked at 213, because 213 is all that car will take. Nothing malfunctioned. That gap, between the number printed on the equipment and the number a person actually experiences standing next to it at 115 degrees, is the thread running through everything below.

It shows up most plainly in the Rivian R2 test. Edmunds measured 305 miles on its real world loop against an EPA figure of 330, and 3.7 seconds to 60 from a car carrying more horsepower than the Tesla that matched it. Neither is a scandal. Both are reminders that a rating is a result from one procedure, not a promise about yours. The same logic runs backwards through the IONNA station, where what changed the visit was a canopy, a bucket of squeegees and a gas station with a bathroom next door, none of which appear on a network's spec page.

The Karmann Ghia conversion kit makes the point from the other direction. Its headline figure is 42 kWh, which is the least interesting thing about it. What took Electric Classic Cars the extra development time was cable management plates, pre-cut looms, a charge socket relocated because a sixties Ghia has no fuel flap, and an inertia switch that kills high voltage after an impact. None of that fits in a spec, and all of it is the difference between a kit that installs and a kit that becomes somebody else's problem.

Prices behave the same way. The Fathom and Slate comparison is not really about $28,350 against $25,000, because neither number survives contact with a configurator or a dealership. The argument is about what each truck refuses to include. And in the Tesla and SpaceX round up, you get the extreme version of the same instinct: when the constraint is not the number on your product but the supply of parts underneath it, you go and build the factory that makes the parts.

What to watch over the next few weeks. Where IONNA's Mesquite rate settles once the introductory week lapses, since 20 cents was always temporary by design and 39 cents is the number that has to compete. Whether Rivian's cheaper R2 trims, which the Edmunds reviewer says are the ones to wait for, arrive with the interior quality of the launch car. And whether the Fathom reaches customers anywhere near its announced figure, which is the one number in today's edition with a human being standing between it and the buyer.


IONNA Opened a Desert Charger With the One Feature Everyone Forgets

IONNA's second site in southern Nevada sits about half a mile off Interstate 15 in Mesquite, and Scott Explains says it had been open roughly 24 hours when he pulled in on a 115 degree afternoon. The layout is four 400 kW cabinets, each able to split between two vehicles, for eight stalls in total, currently six CCS and two NACS with the mix adjustable as more NACS cars arrive. Payment is a credit card tap at the unit, no app or account. The video reports a standard rate of 39 cents per kWh against 47 to 60 cents elsewhere in town, with an introductory 20 cents for the first week. His session took 53 kWh in 16 minutes for $10.60 and peaked at 213 kW, which he notes is his car's ceiling rather than the charger's.

That last detail is the useful one for anyone shopping by kilowatts. A 400 kW cabinet is not a promise about the car you own today, it is a promise the site will not be the limit for the one you buy next. What changed this visit was shade, squeegees, covered picnic tables and a 24 hour gas station next door with restrooms. IONNA, which the video says is jointly owned by eight automakers and has passed 100 locations, is expanding west from a network concentrated in the east.

Electric Classic Cars Built a Bolt-In Kit for the Karmann Ghia

Richard from Electric Classic Cars puts roughly 90 percent of a Karmann Ghia down as Volkswagen Beetle underneath, which is why the shop assumed its long running Beetle kit would drop straight in. It did not. The Ghia has no tall luggage area behind the rear seat for the Beetle's upright battery box, so the pack had to lie flat, which moved the connectors and ended up as an entirely new rear pack. The result is 42 kWh split between a front box where the fuel tank lived and a rear box under the parcel shelf, with a Tesla small drive unit at the back.

The interesting part is what the extra development time actually bought. Most of the tour is brackets, cable management plates, pre-cut looms and a modular charge plate that swaps between type 1, type 1 CCS, type 2 and type 2 CCS so the same kit can be specified for US or European sockets. Because an early sixties Ghia has no external fuel flap, the charge socket lives on the high voltage junction box in the rear wing. Richard says the kits are built to ECE R100, the UN regulation covering electric powertrain safety, and demonstrates the inertia switch cutting high voltage after a simulated impact. Fathom Against Slate Is Not the Fight People Think It Is

Tailosive EV's argument is that the Ford Fathom and the Slate truck are chasing two different buyers, even though their prices nearly touch. The video puts the Fathom at $28,350 including destination, on a 48 volt zonal architecture with LFP cells, giga castings, Apple Maps built in, BlueCruise across the range and cabin space Ford is said to compare to a RAV4's. We covered the naming and the pricing when it was announced. Slate starts under $25,000 before tax and fees with two doors, no speakers, no navigation and no telematics module, which the host points out also means no preconditioning before a fast charge.

His read is that Slate buyers are not only shopping on price. They want fewer parts, unpainted panels held on with visible screws, and nothing capable of serving them an advertisement. He points to the BMW owners currently finding a movie trailer on their center screen, a story that also turns up in today's fifth video. He discloses that he works for another small electric truck company and leaves it out of the comparison. For buyers the harder difference is timing and channel. Slate deliveries are due near the end of this year. Fathom pre orders open early next year with deliveries at the end of it, through dealers who set the final price, the mechanism the host blames for the F-150 Lightning never selling near its announced figure.

The Rivian R2 Is Quick, Handsome, and 25 Miles Short

Edmunds ran a launch package R2, just over $60,000 with destination, through its full test program and came away with one number that stands apart from the rest: 305 miles on its real world range loop against an EPA rating of 330, about 10 percent short, from an 88 kWh pack. The car indicated 334 at the start. The rest lands well. Edmunds measured 3.7 seconds to 60, a tenth behind Rivian's own estimate and a tenth behind a Tesla Model Y Performance the video says gives up close to 150 horsepower to the R2, though the Rivian traps nearly 7 mph faster by the end of the quarter mile. It stopped from 60 in 124 feet, pulled 0.84 g and weighed just under 5,000 pounds.

The criticisms are the kind that surface on a long drive rather than a spec sheet: more wind and tire noise than a Model Y, steering wheel controls the reviewer found busy and occasionally unresponsive, air vents aimed through a touchscreen, and still no CarPlay or Android Auto. Edmunds has bought one for a year long test and reckons the roughly $55,000 premium trim, and the single motor standard due in 2027 at around $45,000, are the better buys. Tesla and SpaceX Are Buying the Layer Under the Car

Kim Java's weekly episode leads with Terafab, a Tesla and SpaceX joint venture chip plant in Grimes County, Texas. The hosts report an initial investment near $17 billion, a footprint of about 100 million square feet, construction finishing around 2029 and roughly 3,000 employees, with research, development, packaging and fabrication under one roof rather than split across sites. Their explanation for the scale is demand the company cannot simply buy: Cyber Cab, Optimus and FSD compute, against what they say is about 2 percent of the supply Tesla needs being available today. The hosts also report Samsung and LG picked for Cyber Cab camera modules at 5 megapixels against 1.2 in current cars, with initial orders covering 30,000 vehicles.

The other thread to watch is Starlink Mobile. On what the video describes as SpaceX's first quarterly earnings call, the hosts say Gwynne Shotwell outlined a consumer phone service with a ground based element that hands off automatically where coverage is good, aimed at a US carrier market she put at roughly $600 billion in combined annual revenue. Also in the episode: EVgo buying Tesla hardware for 500 kW sites branded EVgo superchargers with Magic Dock, a Lemonade discount on FSD miles now live in a fifth state, and Volvo's EX50 replacing the EX30 and EX40 with US arrival expected late in 2027.

Bottom line: If you are shopping this week, the transferable habit is to ask what a number is attached to. Four hundred kilowatts was worth 213 to the car in that story. An EPA rating is a test result, not a guarantee. A $28,350 truck is $28,350 right up until somebody at a desk has a say. The two stories here that hold up best, a canopy in Mesquite and a kit that fits without cutting the car, both came from someone sweating a detail that does not fit in a headline.
