Ford has finally attached a name and a number to the truck it is betting its electric future on. State of Charge reports the midsize electric pickup will be called the Fathom, with a starting MSRP of $28,350 and a destination and delivery fee of $1,595, putting it at $29,945 before tax. Reservations open in early 2027 and the truck is expected to debut later that year. It is the first vehicle on Ford's Universal EV platform, the clean sheet architecture that, according to the video, Ford began engineering after concluding the F-150 Lightning had no path to profitability. The video reports Ford announced the end of Lightning production in late 2025, with the nameplate returning as a plug-in hybrid rather than a full EV.
A sub $30,000 electric truck is a different product category from what came before it, and Ford is not alone there. Host Tom Moloughney notes the Fathom lands roughly $3,500 above the upcoming Slate pickup, which means two of the cheapest electric trucks in the American market will launch within a few thousand dollars of each other and will be judged on equipment rather than sticker. He also flags something buyers should hold onto: the widely repeated 51 kWh battery figure is an estimate that Ford has never formally confirmed. It traces back to an earlier hint that the pack would be about 15 percent smaller than a competitor's roughly 60 kWh unit, and has since hardened into fact through repetition. The Fathom will also be Ford's first EV with a native NACS charging inlet, replacing the separate AC and DC connectors used on every previous Ford electric vehicle. The competitive target is broader than Slate, too. The video says Ford intends the Fathom to compete with affordable electric vehicles from China as well as the US, and is hoping to pull buyers out of compact SUVs and crossovers rather than out of full size trucks.
Most of what is known about the Fathom is manufacturing detail, and it explains the price. According to the video, the truck uses cell to pack battery construction where prismatic cells form part of the structure, a large aluminum unicasting, a 48 volt primary electrical system, and a zonal wiring architecture. Ford is targeting roughly 20 percent fewer parts, 25 percent fewer fasteners and about 40 percent fewer manufacturing workstations than a conventional Ford. The base pack will be LFP chemistry with cells built in Marshall, Michigan, and the standard truck is rear wheel drive with a dual motor all wheel drive version to follow. Every Fathom will ship with the hardware for Ford's next generation BlueCruise, which remains a paid subscription, alongside Apple Maps integration, CarPlay, Android Auto, a digital key and bidirectional power. Moloughney is openly skeptical about range, arguing a 50 kWh pack would need four miles per kilowatt hour to reach 200 miles and that he expects closer to 3.5 at highway speed. On the vehicle itself, the video describes a Maverick sized footprint with more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, a lower roofline chosen specifically for efficiency, aerodynamic work the video says was influenced by Formula 1 methods, and a front trunk. Ford is targeting acceleration comparable to a Mustang EcoBoost, which the host puts at around five seconds to 60 mph. Larger battery options are planned, possibly with different chemistry, though no capacity has been announced. The truck was developed by Ford's California based EV team, and the Universal EV platform is expected to underpin a family of affordable models rather than a single vehicle.
Bottom line: Ford is not trying to build a better Lightning here, it is trying to build a truck that makes money, and the parts count tells you everything about the priorities. That is the right call. The risk is that buyers who cross shop on range walk away disappointed, because a small pack on a 400 volt architecture will likely charge slowly and cover less ground than the electric trucks sold in America so far. Ford's bet is that price beats capability for a large enough group of people. Given what the segment above $50,000 has looked like, that bet is probably right.
