Every story we covered today has a capability buried in it that almost nobody can currently reach. That is the thread, and it is a more useful one than the tired argument about whether electric cars are ready yet. The hardware is ready. Getting at what it can do is where the friction has moved.
The clearest case is the Porsche. Out of Spec measured the base Cayenne Electric at 4.33 seconds to 60 mph with launch control and 4.7 seconds without it, on a $125,000 car that only releases its full output through a procedure nobody performs at a green light. The capability is in the car. Access to it is rationed by software.
Charging tells the same story at a larger scale. On the Everything Electric podcast, Robert Llewellyn describes a 1,500 kW charger adding more than 250 miles in about five minutes, then explains the part that makes it work: a large buffer battery on site, charged overnight, because no ordinary grid connection supplies that on demand. Professor Saiful Islam puts solid state cells, which he says could hold more than five times the energy of current lithium ion, five to ten years from real applications. The chemistry that is actually arriving in people's homes right now is sodium ion, which is heavier, cheaper and far less exciting.
Tesla's version is quieter. The Model Y L recovers around seven miles of range through better glass and thermal software rather than extra cells, and its bidirectional Powershare feature needs a Powerwall 3 on the wall before it does anything at all. Just Have a Think scales the same observation up to whole continents, relaying analyst Hans Eric Melin's argument that Europe can buy battery factories but cannot buy the decade of accumulated mistakes that makes them run properly.
What to watch over the next six months is not peak charging rate or peak horsepower. Those numbers have effectively been won. The number that will separate one product from another is how much of the advertised capability a normal buyer can actually reach, on a normal grid connection, without a second product on the wall or a launch procedure on the screen. That applies to carmakers, charging networks and industrial policy alike.
Bottom line: spec sheets have stopped being a constraint and started being marketing. Whoever wins the next few years will be whoever closes the gap between what their hardware can do and what their customers can get at, which is unglamorous work that rarely makes a headline. Porsche should unlock the power. Tesla should stop selling half a feature. Europe should stop measuring itself in gigafactory announcements and start measuring itself in what those batteries actually end up doing.
