XPENG has published footage of European motoring journalists riding along while its urban self-driving system drives them through Munich, and the interesting part is not the reactions, it is the scenarios. One tester opens by saying it is the first time he has tried any intelligent driving system in Europe. The car meets a vehicle unloading in the right lane and moves around it with no input. It slows behind a cyclist and holds station, passing only once the testers agree there is enough lateral clearance. At one point it sits through a standoff between a car trying to park and another trying to pull out, then decides on its own to overtake. The system is the VLA 2.0 Navigation Guided Pilot, and it is the reason the company's new L03 matters more than its spec sheet suggests. Forbes reported on July 20 that NGP requires the top Ultra trim, which carries three of XPENG's Turing chips and 2,050 TOPS of processing against 750 on the standard cars, and that the Ultra is priced at €46,600 in Germany. The catch, in the same report, is timing: the system has been available in China since March 2026 but is still awaiting European regulatory approval, which Forbes suggests is unlikely to arrive before 2027. Forbes also reported that the L03 will be the first Chinese car with Google Maps Auto SDK integration built in. Anyone reading the Munich footage as a description of what a European delivery will do on day one has the wrong end of it. This is a demonstration of hardware capability waiting on a regulator. Forbes also reported that XPENG is banking on a UN regulation intended to standardize urban assisted driving functions, and that the company now describes itself as a physical AI business, with self-driving cars sitting alongside flying cars and a humanoid robot in the same pitch.

What the testers actually praise is restraint. They describe the car as sitting strictly under the speed limit, moving smoothly enough that one says he felt nothing, and behaving respectfully around other road users. One notes that the car's cameras cover every direction at once, which he frames as the concrete advantage over a human in a city full of cyclists and scooters. Another says the real value is taking the stress out of urban driving rather than adding convenience on the motorway. There is a flash of honesty in the clip too. After the car chooses to overtake, a passenger says it got too close, then immediately says the decision itself was the right one. That is a more useful data point than a clean run, because it shows where the system's margins sit, and margins are exactly where a European regulator will be looking. One tester also says he would happily own the Ultra version specifically for the city driving, while still wanting to drive it himself elsewhere, which is probably the honest position most buyers will land on.

Bottom line: Treat this as a capability preview and a piece of regulatory groundwork at the same time, because that is what manufacturer footage of an unapproved system is. That said, the situations chosen are harder than most demo reels bother with, and a car that negotiates a parking standoff in Munich traffic is doing something Europe's incumbents are not shipping to customers. If XPENG's timeline holds and this lands on a €46,600 car in 2027, the pressure will not be on Tesla. It will be on every brand still promising urban assistance by the end of the decade.
