Volvo Construction Equipment has started serial production of the A30 and A40 Electric, the world's first battery electric articulated haulers in their size class. The machines are built to deliver the same performance as their diesel counterparts, which Volvo frames not as a caveat but as a baseline expectation.
The development team worked with a deliberately flat organizational structure, pulling their desks right next to the assembly line during the early builds. The moment the first machine was fully assembled, flashed with new software, and turned on with a key is something the engineers describe as one they will never forget. That pride in end-to-end ownership, and a lot of fun during development, is what those involved say made the result possible.
Both models, the A30 Electric and A40 Electric, are now being prepared for delivery to the first customers. Volvo says the machines represent a strong business opportunity for operators while reducing emissions on construction sites at the same time.
The company describes the start of serial production as a major milestone in its zero-emissions journey and says what excites the team most now is seeing the machines in action at customer sites making a real difference.
