Tesla has started pushing a version of its FSD v14 software to Hardware 3 cars, the older computer fitted before the AI4 generation, and Out of Spec Reviews took the first drive in a 2019 Model 3 Performance showing 170,000 miles. The channel reads the release notes on camera. Tesla describes the update as distilling the v14 behaviour from Hardware 4 down into Hardware 3, using the newer stack as a teacher rather than rewriting the old one by hand. Listed changes include better traffic light and cut-in handling, fewer false slowdowns, smoother steering and more consistent lane centring, plus parking, unparking and reversing capability that the hosts say Hardware 3 has never had. The software version shown on screen is 2026.20.6.11.
The interesting part is not the driving, it is the precedent. Hardware 3 cars are now the affordable end of the used Tesla market, and their owners bought a feature whose fullest version arrived first on a computer they do not have. The host says he spent $8,000 on FSD for this car and describes feeling that Hardware 3 owners had been left behind. Whether a seven year old car keeps receiving meaningful software is a question most of the industry has not had to answer yet, because most of the industry has not been selling driver assistance as something that appreciates. There is a used market consequence the video does not spell out. If capability parity is even partially achievable in software, a Hardware 3 car that gets updates is worth more than one that does not, and anyone shopping used Teslas now has a reason to check which computer is fitted before checking the odometer.
The drive runs from a rural property outside Raleigh into the city centre. The hosts report the car reversing out of a sloped driveway and completing a three point turn without help, behaviour they say the older software never managed. They describe the overall character as more confident and considerably smoother than the previous 12.6 release, with the Hurry speed profile feeling roughly the way Standard does on Hardware 4, and note that speed profiles can now be changed from the steering wheel. The limitation they keep returning to is phantom braking, the term owners use for unprompted braking with no visible cause. According to the video it occurred several times across the drive, including once near a row of bins, and the hosts say the update did not remove it. They also describe an unprotected left turn on Wade Avenue that took the car three minutes to complete, which they read as correct if slow behaviour rather than a failure. Out of Spec repeats throughout that this is a Level 2 system and the driver remains responsible.
Two smaller observations are worth flagging for owners. The hosts test how tolerant the driver monitoring is by holding a phone and looking away, and report that the car issued an attention warning noticeably faster than the older software did, and faster than Hardware 4 does in its Standard profile. They frame that as appropriate rather than annoying, and repeat that nobody should be texting behind the wheel. The drive ends with the car attempting to park itself in a multi-storey garage. According to the video it selected an awkward bay next to a pillar, abandoned the attempt, then reversed into a different space unaided. The hosts say parking behaviour is an area Tesla has signalled it intends to keep working on, and that this drive is the first time Hardware 3 has attempted any of it.
Bottom line: the headline is not how good v14 Lite is, it is that it exists at all. Tesla had every commercial reason to let Hardware 3 quietly rot and nudge those owners into new cars, and instead spent engineering effort on a computer it stopped fitting years ago. If you own one, that matters more than any single line in the release notes. But the phantom braking Out of Spec keeps running into is the one thing that decides whether people actually use this software or switch it off, and goodwill has a shelf life. Judge this on the next update, not this one.
