TELO has raised the tow rating on its compact electric pickup to 8,000 pounds. The announcement comes from co-founder and CTO Forest North in a video posted to the company's own channel, and it moves the number well past the target TELO set for itself early on, which North describes as a stake in the ground at more than 6,000 pounds. His reasoning is that the company has now towed enough with the truck to know what it can do. He also points at a specific market reason for the jump: a new class of travel trailers arriving with their own battery packs and regenerative braking, many of which he says sit in the 6,000 to 8,000 pound range. A rating that stops at 6,000 would have left those trailers out. North also flags the limit of the claim himself, saying a large diesel truck is still likely the better tool for long distance towing and that the MT1's case is shorter trips.

For a truck that TELO says weighs a little over 4,000 pounds, that is a striking ratio, and it is worth putting next to something familiar. Autoblog's spec listing for the far larger Porsche Cayenne Electric puts its maximum towing capacity at around 7,716 pounds. TELO is claiming more from a vehicle that InsideEVs describes as roughly the length of a Mini Hardtop, with pricing that outlet reports starting at 41,520 dollars and rising to 55,999 dollars for a dual motor, long range, solar equipped configuration. The same report says TELO is aiming to begin production by the end of 2026, having recently signed a manufacturing partner for the truck's body structure. The figure buyers will actually want, and which this video does not give, is towed range. Pulling anything substantial cuts electric range hard, and on a truck with a battery sized for a compact vehicle, that arithmetic matters more than the rating itself. The trailer segment North points to complicates it in a useful way, since a trailer carrying its own pack and its own regen is closer to a second drivetrain than a dead weight, but almost nobody owns one yet.

North's case for the number rests on braking rather than pulling power. He argues that a four wheel drive electric truck able to accept very high charging power can also absorb very high regen power, so it can hold speed down a long grade for miles without touching the friction brakes, which he frames as the harder part of towing safely. He points to SAE J2807, the industry towing standard, and to its Davis Dam procedure, an eleven mile climb at a six percent grade, noting that the heat problem the test was designed around is largely a combustion engine problem. On packaging, he says the hitch sits close to the rear axle, giving a shorter lever arm so trailer weight disturbs the front of the vehicle less, and that the steel chassis carries a heavy crossmember tying the hitch to the structure. He also compares towing the same trailer with his own diesel SUV and says the electric truck felt stronger pulling away on a grade, because there is no torque converter to spin up before anything happens. On mass, he says the MT1 is small but not light, and that its weight and four wheel drive help keep it planted with a trailer attached.

Bottom line: Tow ratings from companies that have not yet started production are statements of intent as much as engineering, and this one should be read that way until an MT1 is on a customer driveway with a trailer behind it. That said, North's explanation is more specific than most startup claims, and the braking argument is the right one to lead with. The question TELO still has to answer in public is range while towing. Get that number out and the 8,000 pound figure becomes useful. Leave it out and it stays a headline.
