Engineering Explained spent a day with the Rivian R2 at its media launch and came away almost sold, which is unusual for a channel that leans on the technical rather than the emotional. The R2 is Rivian's smaller, cheaper SUV, and the host frames it around price: a lot of the R1's character for roughly half the money, in a vehicle he pegs at around $60,000 as tested. The performance trim he drove makes a claimed 656 horsepower, hits 60 in about 3.6 seconds, and carries an EPA rating of 330 miles. Across the range, he says EPA figures run from 307 miles at the low end to 345 at the top. Most of the video is a walk through why the engineering choices add up, and where Rivian trimmed to reach the number.

The R2 lands in the part of the market where it will be cross-shopped hard. The host notes it undercuts a Lucid Gravity, which he places around $90,000, while offering similar packaging touches like a flat rear floor and a front trunk. The buyer consideration the video raises but does not fully resolve is charging speed. He reports 10 to 80 percent in about 29 minutes and a peak near 230 kW, which he calls slow by modern standards, the result of choosing energy-dense NMCA cells to maximize range rather than chase a peak charge rate. For context the video does not add directly: rivals on 800-volt architectures, like Hyundai's E-GMP cars, advertise that same 10 to 80 window in closer to 18 minutes. If you road trip constantly, that gap is the thing to weigh against the R2's range and price, and it is the one spec here that a spreadsheet buyer will fixate on.

On the engineering, the host is enthusiastic. He describes a rear-biased setup with a front axle disconnect, so in normal driving the R2 runs on the larger rear motor alone and stays remarkably quiet. The battery is an 88 kWh usable pack on a 450-volt architecture, using larger 4695 cells in a single stack instead of the R1's double-stacked 2170s, which he says helps cut part count and cost. Curb weight comes in just under 5,000 pounds. He praises the steering-wheel scroll controls, the retention of real stalks and a proper shifter, and one-pedal driving that stops fully. On safety, he walks through door handles that double as mechanical latches on all four doors, with cross-side power redundancy. He also notes the R2 supports bidirectional charging at 11 kW, runs 10 exterior cameras and five radar units, and skips Apple CarPlay in favor of built-in Google Maps, which he argues is the right call in an EV because native maps handle charging stops. Ground clearance is 9.6 inches and the rear seats fold in a 40/20/40 split. The asterisk he flags for buyers: early cars ship without the lidar Rivian plans to add late this year, and only lidar-equipped R2s will eventually unlock eyes-off driving, so waiting a few months may mean better resale and a more future-proof car.

Bottom line: This is the rare launch review where the reviewer says out loud he is probably buying one, and the reasoning holds up. The R2 is not the fastest-charging EV in its class, and Rivian has clearly optimized for range and cost over peak charge rate. But the packaging, the controls, and the price make it the most convincing sub-$60,000 electric SUV Rivian has built. If you can live with a road-trip charging stop closer to half an hour, the harder question is not whether to buy, but whether to wait for the lidar cars.
