A 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 arrives at Out of Spec Renew with 153,000 miles, no warranty left and a fault the owner cannot reproduce on demand. The video says the car shuts down without warning while driving, usually in hot weather, and restarts fine afterward. The video says a dealer diagnosed a failed drive motor and quoted around $8,000. The shop takes a different route: a complete used drive unit pulled from a dismantler with, by the host's estimate, somewhere under 15,000 miles on it. What follows is roughly an hour of watching a repair that most owners will never see, and a fairly clear picture of what long term electric car ownership actually costs once the warranty is behind you.

This is the part of the used EV market that has not caught up yet. Battery health gets all the attention and drive units get very little, and there is no settled way to price the work when one does fail. The gap between an $8,000 dealer quote and a used assembly plus labor is the practical case for finding an independent shop that works on high voltage systems before you need one. If you are shopping a high mileage electric car, two questions are worth asking that the video does not raise directly: whether any factory powertrain coverage transfers to you, and whether salvage drive units for that specific platform are actually available, because the answer varies a lot by model and by how many were built. On a car this common, the parts supply is what makes the cheaper path possible.

The stored fault points to excessive current on a motor phase, and the host explains that the system trips and shuts the car down above a threshold of 2,000 amps. Service data lists several possible causes, from insulation breakdown in the motor to a failed inverter power module, and he is candid that he cannot narrow it down without tearing the old unit apart. Removal means dropping the entire rear subframe, and his best observation is that it nearly did not have to. The motor has three mounts and would drop straight out the bottom if two brackets on the subframe were not in the way by about an inch and a half per side. He also finds the axles integrated into the wheel bearing assembly rather than separately serviceable. Reassembly ends with a resolver calibration drive, a 30 minute coolant purge routine and a magnetic drain plug he adds himself, saying Hyundai and Kia have not fitted them on the models he has worked on. The small stuff is instructive as well. He has to reconnect power partway through because the hatch will not open once the car is shut down, an aftermarket trailer hitch blocks access to a low voltage connector, and the first boot throws a high voltage interlock fault that turns out to be a connector not quite seated. He closes by recommending gear reduction fluid changes every 50,000 to 100,000 miles on any electric car, which is maintenance most owners are never told about.

Bottom line: The repair is a win. The engineering note underneath it is the real story. An inch and a half of bracket clearance is the difference between a job an independent shop can do in a morning and one that needs a lift table, a forklift and a subframe drop, and that decision gets made years before anyone has to pay for it. Electric cars are supposed to be cheaper to keep. They will be, right up until the first out of warranty drive unit, and then serviceability is the whole bill. Ask about it before you buy at 100,000 miles.
