Tesla's Semi has spent years as more promise than product, and a walking tour from the Core Memory Podcast shows the factory that is supposed to change that. Filmed in March 2026 outside Reno, Nevada, on the Gigafactory Nevada campus, the video captures the plant in its final stretch before volume production, with lines being switched on rather than built. Guide Dan Priestley walks through a roughly 1.7 million square foot building laid out on a single floor, following the truck from raw steel coils through stamping, body, battery and final assembly. The stated goal is large: an eventual run rate of 50,000 trucks a year, or about a thousand a week, from a facility Tesla says is dedicated entirely to the electric Semi.
Electric Class 8 trucks are no longer a category Tesla has to itself. Established truck makers already sell battery-powered heavy trucks, so the Semi is arriving into a segment that has moved from concept to early fleet use while Tesla worked through delays. That backdrop is what makes the factory the real story here rather than the truck's spec sheet. The video's pitch is vertical integration and scale: in-house stamping, castings the video says come from Tesla's own California facility, and battery packs built and installed on site.
For a fleet buyer, the question has never been whether an electric semi is impressive but whether one company can build them consistently, in volume, and support them for years. Priestley says the company broke ground less than two years ago and built the plant in roughly six-month phases, and describes an overhead conveyance setup the video calls one of the heaviest electric monorail systems in use, with carriers rated to move assemblies well over ten thousand pounds and adjust height to the operator. He explains the skateboard, the frame, axles and battery packs that the cab drops onto, and a battery marriage step where three packs on the long-range truck bolt in from below. The body shop, the video says, runs heavily automated at around fifteen robots per person, while general assembly stays more hands-on.
On the product side, the video reports the Semi uses the same cell as the Cybertruck, runs two differently geared drive axles, one built for torque and one for highway efficiency that disconnects at cruise, and seats the driver in the center with ten exterior cameras. Priestley, who says he holds a commercial license, describes charging built around a mandatory 30-minute driver break, claiming roughly 300 miles of range recovered in that window at a mega charger. He also says Tesla has logged more than 13 million test miles, with one truck past 400,000, before committing to high volume.
Bottom line: Factory tours are marketing, and this one is no exception, so treat the run-rate targets as goals rather than guarantees. The useful signal is that Tesla is now talking about the Semi as a manufacturing problem, not a design one, which is the stage where heavy trucks usually either scale or stall. If Tesla hits even a fraction of a thousand trucks a week, it changes the electric freight conversation. Fleets should watch delivery numbers over the next year, not the light tunnel. The trucks look ready. The proof is whether the line actually runs.
