Hungary is not the country most people would name if asked where Europe's solar boom is happening. It gets less sun than Spain, its government spent years publicly dismissing EU climate policy, which the video says Viktor Orbán once called a utopian fantasy, and until recently it had almost no grid scale battery storage. It also draws a larger share of its electricity from solar than any other country in the world. DW Planet A travelled east of Budapest to a 450 megawatt construction site that the channel says will be able to supply around 106,000 households, nearly twice the size of Hungary's current largest solar park. The project began in 2021 and spent four years in planning before excavators arrived in September 2025. Roughly 90 percent of the panels are already installed, and the first electricity is due to reach the grid in September 2026. What the video finds on site says more about how solar actually gets built than any climate target does.
The scale of Hungary's position is easy to underrate. The energy think tank Ember, in its Global Electricity Review 2026, put Hungary's solar share at 27 percent of electricity generation in 2025, up from 24 percent a year earlier and the highest in the world. That is a country of ten million people beating Spain, Greece and Chile on a measure most people assume is settled by latitude. For anyone watching solar markets elsewhere, the useful part is not the ranking, it is the sequence. Hungary's buildout ran first on guaranteed prices, then on market linked support, and now, at this site, on nothing at all. The park in the video has no state funding and no long term buyer for its output, so the developer carries the price risk alone. That looks like the direction European solar is drifting as subsidy schemes wind down, and it is the reason on site batteries have stopped being optional.
László Módos, head of development at the company leading the project, tells DW that Hungary's sunlight is merely satisfactory for investment, and that land availability, soil and grid access mattered as much as irradiation. He says potential buyers would not pay enough to make a long term contract work, leaving returns dependent on the Hungarian power exchange. The video traces the boom back to a fixed price subsidy introduced in 2008, then to rules requiring wind turbines to stand twelve kilometres from residential areas, which it says stalled wind almost completely and left solar as the only realistic route to EU renewable targets. Péter Kaderják, a former state secretary at the energy ministry, frames the political appeal as self sufficiency rather than climate action. The bill is arriving now. DW reports that no new grid connections have been granted to large solar parks for three years, and that this developer is building its own connection point and handing it to the transmission operator at no charge. Panels on site face east and west rather than south, which construction coordinator Matias Fuentes Andaur says spreads output through the day instead of dumping it all at noon, and also lets the rows sit closer together. The video says 160 batteries are planned on site, storing up to four hours of output for release into the evening peak. Kaderják tells DW that Hungarian battery capacity was a rounding error three years ago and could reach 1.5 to 2 gigawatts this year.
Bottom line: The interesting thing about Hungary is not that it went solar. It is that it went solar for reasons that had nothing to do with emissions, which is exactly why the model travels. Cheap land, a dislike of imported gas and a workable price signal will do it. The catch sits in the same story. Build panels faster than you build grid and storage and you end up with midday power worth close to nothing and a three year wait for a connection. The panels were always the easy half.
