EcoFlow has revealed a second generation of its Stream home-energy system, and UpsideDownFork covered both the international launch and a hands-on at the InterSolar show. The big number is solar input, which the video says rises from around 2,000 watts on the original units to 5,000 watts, more than doubling what plug-in owners can feed in. The batteries grew too: the smaller unit moves from under 2 kWh to 3 kWh, and the larger one from under 4 kWh to 5 kWh, both in a more compact shell. EcoFlow also switched to a full cast-aluminum housing that doubles as the heat sink, claims a 46 percent thermal improvement, added fire suppression, and stripped the app back to three main modes. Early-bird sales are set for August 12 with a full launch on September 15.
The interesting part is how EcoFlow hit 5,000 watts of solar without making the system more dangerous to install. The host explains it did so by raising current rather than voltage, keeping the low-voltage design that makes plug-in solar approachable, with each tracker taking up to 40 amps. That choice ties directly into regulation, which is the context the spec sheet leaves out. Plug-in or balcony solar lives or dies by local rules, and in Germany, where such systems are explicitly permitted, they have spread quickly on the back of a simple feed-in cap. The video reports the UK is expected to mirror the German approach, which would limit true DIY plug-in output to 800 watts, with higher power unlocked only through professional installation. So the headline 5,000 watt input is real, but what you are legally allowed to push back out will depend on where you live and who fits it.
On practicality, the video highlights the stackable design: batteries clip together vertically, up to three high, connecting over DC contacts with no expansion cables, and wall tethers keep them upright. The host defends EcoFlow's choice to stack vertically while rivals go wide, relaying the company's argument that floor space is the most valuable space in a home. He also notes a redesigned display that now shows a battery percentage rather than just a light bar, a new energy meter with two clamps, and a simplified four-step setup in the app, which EcoFlow says replaces the fiddly per-unit pairing that used to generate support calls. A single 5 kWh battery can act as a standalone unit, then scale up over time by adding modules underneath, up to a large system the host reckons few homes will ever need.
EcoFlow told the host the second-generation gear is backward compatible with the first, with the newer unit acting as the brain and the older one working alongside it in a distributed setup over the shared app. A new gateway is added, though the host notes it is professional-install only and, for now, needs the version-two hardware, something an EcoFlow product manager said may change later. The one compromise he spotted is the drop from two AC outlets to one. The bigger thermal fix is visible in the deeper heat-sink fins and the cast-aluminum body that sheds heat across its whole surface. UK pricing was not finalized at filming, but the video suggests it could come in more competitive than the first series.
Bottom line: Doubling solar input while keeping the system low-voltage and DIY-friendly is the right kind of upgrade, and the all-metal case plus fire suppression should quiet the safety worries that dog plug-in storage. But do not buy on the 5,000 watt figure alone. If UK rules land where the video expects, most self-install owners are capped at 800 watts of export anyway. This is a strong update for anyone who can get a pro to unlock the gateway, and a solid, safer starter for everyone else.
