Out of Spec Reviews took a 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance to a race track for a narrow reason: the word on the badge. Not a full review, not a range test, just a day of asking whether the car does the things a performance badge implies. What the video finds is a fast, well-tuned crossover with an odd set of missing pieces. Tesla removed track mode when it updated the car, the reviewer says, leaving a stability control setting called reduced as the only way to loosen the leash. There is a new battery pack and a reworked rear motor. There is also, by the host's own measurement, a launch control mode that made the car slower than simply flooring it.

The tire is the part a buyer can actually do something about, and it is where the video keeps landing. The car came on all-season rubber chosen with range in mind, and range-oriented tires generally trade peak grip for lower rolling resistance. That is a normal engineering compromise, not a defect, and it is the reason a car can feel eager on a back road and vague at the limit. The reviewer says Tesla indicated at the car's launch event that a summer performance tire would be available to order or through a service centre, and that this turned out not to be the case. Anyone buying an EV with enthusiast intent should confirm the factory tire options before ordering rather than after, because a tire swap on an EV is not a free decision: stickier rubber costs efficiency, and on a car sold partly on its range figure that is a real tradeoff.

The instrumented part is short and strange. Using a data recorder with two people aboard on a damp surface, the video reports 3.58 seconds to 60 mph without launch mode and 3.67 seconds with it, repeated for consistency, with a later no-launch run at 3.61. The host says launch mode appears to ramp into the power while a simple full-throttle start delivers it immediately, and he is careful to note these runs were not an attempt to verify Tesla's own acceleration claims. The pack, according to the video, is a new higher energy density Panasonic 2170 cell built at a plant in Kansas, around 85 to 86 kWh, and currently unique to this model in North America. The rear motor is described as a more highly strung version of the standard unit, similar in approach to the Model 3 Performance.

The complaints are thermal and electronic rather than mechanical. The reviewer says the car reached a significant power limit after a couple of laps from a cold pack, that battery temperature read close to 62 degrees Celsius after a supercharging stop en route, and that with track mode gone there is no mode that pre-chills the battery for hard driving. He says the brake by wire system gives excellent pedal feel day to day but does not communicate fade, and that he could smell the pads early. In stability reduced he describes the car grabbing brakes to kill rotation, which he argues sometimes unsettles the car more than leaving it alone. The praise is consistent and specific: a stiff, compliant chassis, direct steering, a strong rear axle, and a balance he calls excellent once the weight is managed. He also notes the car can accept an over-the-air update, so a track mode could return.

Bottom line: this is a quick, genuinely well-sorted crossover wearing a badge that promises a car it was not built to be, and the honest read is that Tesla knows exactly who buys it. Most owners want a stoplight weapon that drives itself the rest of the week, and that is what this is. If you actually care about the ragged edge, the reviewer's own advice is the right advice: buy a Model 3 Performance, which kept track mode, or buy a standard Model Y and spend the difference on tires. A performance badge should survive three laps. Watch whether a software update quietly fixes this.
