In Oslo it costs less to plug an electric car in than to leave it sitting there doing nothing. Out of Spec Roaming works the arithmetic on camera at a municipal kerbside unit: 2.26 kroner per kilowatt hour for the electricity, 12 kroner an hour for the bay, which he totals at 153 kroner for a six hour stay against 173 kroner for six hours in an ordinary space with no charger in it. The city did not make electric cars better. It made not having a driveway stop mattering.
That is the move worth noticing across all five stories today. None of them is waiting on range or on a cell breakthrough. They are people and companies that were held outside by something structural, and in each case the structure shifted rather than the technology. Larry, the 98 year old in TFLEV's video, is not placing a bet on autonomy. He says the novelty went long ago, and what he wanted was to stop checking whether every intersection is clear. In Ben Alexxander's account of CATL's new direct sales platform, the figure everyone will repeat is $63 per kilowatt hour. The figure that actually changes something is 600, the minimum order in cells.
We covered a falling cell price three days ago, but cost is not the mechanism this time. Oslo's electricity is cheap, but the working part is a parking tariff that makes plugging in the lazy option as well as the right one. CATL's cells are cheap, but the working part is that a small installer who could never meet a factory minimum can now buy at the source. Cheapness is the headline. Access is the change.
The Straight Pipes spend a ride across Austin realising they have stopped paying attention to the driving at all, which is either the strongest endorsement in today's five or the most uncomfortable, depending on where you sit. Slate Auto belongs in a different column: a likeable video of the company's own truck helping an intern move home to Indiana, made by the company that builds it. The distance closed there is between a manufacturer and its audience, not the same kind of barrier as the other four.
What to watch is whether any of these removals hold up under ordinary conditions. Oslo's free overnight parking is a setting a council can change, and the video describes an unresolved argument in the city about residents' permits not counting against charger bays. CATL's platform, as reported, needs a Chinese business licence, so it reaches no one elsewhere yet. A Cybercab you cannot buy is a demonstration. The barrier moved in all five. It has not disappeared in any of them.
In Oslo, Charging Costs Less Than Not Charging
Out of Spec Roaming spends the video on Oslo's kerbside AC charging, which he presents as the reason the city can run roughly half its cars on batteries. The municipality operates about 2,500 AC plugs, he says, from 3.6 kW up to 22 kW for cars that can accept it, all bring your own cable, which lets the units be sealed against the weather. Activation runs through the city's own app, and it bills the electricity and the parking bay together: 2.26 kroner per kilowatt hour on the day of filming, plus 12 kroner an hour for the space. The rate is not fixed but tracks the national average electricity price with a service fee added. At 6 kW, six hours adds 36 kilowatt hours for 153 kroner including parking, against 173 kroner to sit in a nearby bay with no charger at all. From 8pm to 8am the parking charge is waived entirely. He also reports that Norwegian rules give apartment residents with a designated parking space the right to install a charger, and that new cars sold in Norway must be supplied with a type 2 cable.
For a reader outside Norway the transferable part is not the subsidy. It is the ordering: the cheapest way to leave a car in central Oslo is attached to a charger. That is a tariff decision rather than an infrastructure programme, and a city with a fraction of the plugs could copy it without touching its grid.
Eighty Years of Driving, and He Would Rather Not Watch the Intersection
TFLEV's interview is with Larry, the host's grandfather in law, who is 98 and has just bought a Model Y after what he estimates as more than a hundred cars. His reasoning has nothing to do with running costs. He says he has been driving for 80 years, the novelty wore off, and he no longer wants to check every intersection himself. He tells the host he trusts the car's self-driving completely, and that in roughly two to three months it has not made an error, including one occasion when it stopped for a chipmunk crossing the road. On camera the system does miss the turn into their destination, and he corrects it with the brake and the turn signal, which he describes as routine. He charges at home, with solar.
This is one owner's account rather than a safety assessment, and the video is open about the fact that he intervenes when he wants a particular route. What makes it unusual is who is speaking. Drivers in their nineties are normally discussed in the third person in autonomy coverage, as a use case rather than a customer, an argument we made in The Self-Driving Story Nobody Is Telling.
Fifteen Minutes in a Cybercab, and the Novelty Is Already Gone
Jacob and Yuri take their first Cybercab ride in Austin, and most of what they find is interior detail. Two seats, no steering wheel, no pedals, doors that lift, and purple lighting to show which car is yours. Cabin controls slide the whole bench fore and aft. The screen carries Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, all of which require your own login. The Grok assistant declines to give them the odometer reading or a rear camera view. Riders must be 13 or over, with an adult between 13 and 17. They rate the ride as slightly floaty but not nauseating, note there is no rear visibility of any kind, and describe one lane change across three lanes as abrupt. At the end, the car asks for a tip.
This is the second Cybercab first ride we have covered in three days, and the two are converging rather than contradicting. Out of Spec Reviews, in Monday's edition, flagged the doors, the suspension and the absence of rear visibility. The Straight Pipes arrive independently at rear visibility and at the soft suspension. On availability, the hosts mention an expected price of around $30,000 US, framed as expectation rather than announcement, and the in-car assistant tells them the car is not yet available for individual purchase.
CATL Drops the Minimum Order to 600 Cells
Ben Alexxander reports that CATL has started selling LFP cells directly to buyers in China through its own online store, which he says launched in June and has already drawn registrations from more than 1,800 energy storage companies. The headline figure is around $63 per kilowatt hour, based on what he describes as a 314 amp hour cell. The minimum order is three boxes, or 600 cells, which he calculates as well over 500 kilowatt hours of storage for somewhere in the high $30,000s US. The video reports a five year warranty and shipping within three to five working days, and rates the cells at roughly 8,000 cycles while retaining 70 percent of original capacity. He is careful that this is not a like for like comparison with a finished product: his figure for an installed Tesla Powerwall in the United States, roughly $960 to $1,220 per kilowatt hour of storage, covers inverter, enclosure, warranty and installation. He also says comparable Chinese cells sell for around $55 to $59, and that registration requires a Chinese business licence, closing the platform to overseas buyers. His own advice is not to import loose cells unless you know exactly what you are doing.
Set against the sodium cell figure of about $51 per kilowatt hour reported in Sunday's edition, the signal here is not that cells got cheap. It is that they are sold like a commodity now, in small lots, to buyers who had no route to the factory before.
Slate Films Its Own Truck Doing a 103 Mile Move
Slate Auto's channel runs a series built on viewer requests, and this instalment takes on helping somebody move. The company loads a Slate truck and a trailer with the belongings of Michelle, a summer intern heading home to Lafayette, Indiana, and drives the route, which the truck lists as 103 miles and about two hours. The truck had roughly 17 miles on it beforehand. Boxes go in the bed and in the frunk, a hitch is fitted for the trailer, and the backup camera gets a mention on the way out.
Nothing here is a test. There is no consumption figure, no payload number, no price and no charging stop on camera, which is what a manufacturer's own channel is for. What it does show is a real load in a real bed over a real distance, which is more than a stage reveal offers. Read it as a first look at the vehicle in use, and wait for someone without a stake to attach numbers.
Bottom line: Take Oslo's lesson, because it is the only one here you can act on. Cheap kerbside AC plus a parking tariff that makes plugging in the default does more for people without driveways than another 350 kW station ever will, and it needs a pricing decision rather than a grid upgrade. The CATL story matters for the same reason and not for its price tag: lots of 600 are what break a middleman. Larry and the Cybercab are the demand side proving the point. Slate's video is an advertisement, and a good one.
