Same car, same specification, two different emissions figures. Everything Electric TECH opens today with a study of 500 daily driven plug-in hybrids in Shanghai, and the finding is not really about the hardware. Kept at a high state of charge, the video reports, those cars put out 40 to 60 percent less nitrogen oxide than a petrol equivalent around town. Never plugged in, the same research is quoted as showing nitrogen oxide up 62 percent, hydrocarbons up 70 percent and carbon dioxide up 46 percent against a comparable combustion car. One vehicle, and a swing that size decided by a household routine.

That is the thread through all five stories today. The equipment increasingly does not have one performance number. It has a spread, and the owner picks a point on it.

Aptera has just measured its own spread and published it. Across three days at its Carlsbad site, with an outside test house wiring instruments to each string on the car, the company logged about 4.22 kilowatt hours parked with the hatch closed, 4.4 with a single reposition at solar noon, and 4.75 with the hatch open. Same car, same week, same sun. Half a kilowatt hour sits between the owner who parks and forgets and the owner who moves it once after lunch.

Most of the industry is trying to take that decision off the owner altogether. Gjeebs has run an R2 for a week and the feature he most wants, point to point driving, is a software update Rivian has not shipped yet. Anker is selling a 3.3 year payback that only exists if the box trades tariffs on your behalf without being asked. Battery Man puts it plainly at Battersea: none of this can be allowed to become a second job.

The open question is sequencing: the automation is arriving faster than the rules that would let it run unsupervised. Anker showed a unit in London built ready for regulations it cannot use yet. EcoFlow, at a similar event, went the other way and stated flatly that its new battery is not a plug-in product and needs an electrician. And on the road side, Everything Electric TECH says a pay per mile charge for electric cars is coming in the UK in 2028, exempting vans and the first few thousand miles. That is the point where the owner's behaviour stops being an environmental argument and becomes a line on a bill, which is historically when behaviour moves fastest.


The Plug-In Hybrid Number That Moves With the Owner

Everything Electric TECH leads its roundup with a study of 500 daily driven plug-in hybrids in Shanghai, and the numbers cut both ways. Charged regularly, the host says those cars emit 40 to 60 percent less nitrogen oxide than a comparable petrol car in city driving. Run as ordinary petrol cars, he says the same research found nitrogen oxide up 62 percent, hydrocarbons up 70 percent and carbon dioxide up 46 percent, because the engine ends up both moving the car and putting charge back into an empty pack. His conclusion is that an unplugged plug-in hybrid is worse than the petrol car it replaced.

The rest is a numbers round. The video reports Tesla has built its 10 millionth vehicle, that solar supplied 52 terawatt hours across the EU in June for about 25 percent of generation against 8 percent from coal, and that US solar reached 45.5 terawatt hours in May, beating coal over a full month for the first time. He also says Volkswagen's entry ID Polo starts a little over £22,000 with a 37 kilowatt hour pack and drew 25,000 orders in its first week in Europe.

One thing no used listing will show you: which kind of owner a plug-in hybrid had. Mileage is recorded. Charging habits are not.

A Week in the R2, and the Part He Is Still Waiting For

A week into ownership, Gjeebs sums up the R2 as comfort rather than pace. He says the car uses a valved adaptive damper setup rather than air suspension, with MacPherson struts up front, and that the soft setting deals with bumps better than his Model Y does. He agrees with viewers who called the steering light, and says it suits the car. Ground clearance he puts at 9.6 inches, around three more than the Model Y.

He is also blunt about efficiency. The car he is driving carries an 88 kilowatt hour pack against 79 in the Model Y Premium, he says, for a similar range figure, which is why he rejects the claim he heard at the launch event that the two are equally efficient. He rates the hands-free system as roughly level with GM's Super Cruise, with the advantage that it works on ordinary roads rather than only mapped highways, and notes it does not respond to stop signs or traffic lights. He says Rivian has point to point driving coming later this year, and he is explicitly withholding judgement until it arrives.

That reservation is the useful part, and it is why we keep a running R2 delivery tracker. What the car is sold as and what it does on collection day are still moving apart.

Aptera Handed the Instruments to Somebody Else

Rather than publish its own logs, Aptera brought in an independent testing, inspection and certification company to measure the solar output of its vehicle. The engineer on camera explains that data loggers were wired to each string on the car to record current, voltage and power, along with the high voltage line feeding the battery, so the readings could be checked against what the car reports on its own display. Curved body panels make this harder than testing a flat array, he says, because there is no single angle to the sun.

Testing ran for three days at the company's Carlsbad, California headquarters. Aptera says the car produced about 4.22 kilowatt hours parked with the hatch closed on day one, 4.4 kilowatt hours with one reposition at solar noon on day two, and 4.75 kilowatt hours with the hatch open and a single reposition on day three. A test report covering all three days has been published.

The interesting part is not the figure, it is who produced it. Daily yield is the number a solar car concept rests on, and the easiest number for a company to be optimistic about. Handing the instruments to somebody else is the cheapest credibility available.

Five Kilowatt Hours, Built for a Rule Britain Has Not Written

UpsideDownFork went to an Anker SOLIX launch event in London and came back with specifications rather than a verdict. The Solarbank 4 E5000 Pro holds 5 kilowatt hours and, he says, allows the whole of it to be used rather than holding a reserve. It carries four MPPT inputs but will accept up to 12 panels, and stacks with five expansion batteries for around 30 kilowatt hours. Hardwired, he says it moves 2.5 kilowatts in each direction, buying electricity when it is cheap and discharging when it is not, which is where Anker's claimed 3.3 year payback comes from.

Plugged into a socket instead, he says it is capped at 800 watts. That is the same ceiling yesterday's edition ran into, when an installer deliberately wired 1,840 watts of panels into an 800 watt inverter, and it remains the number that decides what a plug-in product can actually do in the UK.

He notes the unit is built ready for rules that do not exist yet, with fire suppression included, and says remarks from Octopus Energy's chief executive point to 2027 before plug-in batteries are properly covered. He arrived skeptical, and stops short of recommending it before testing one himself.

EcoFlow's New Battery Is Not a Plug-In Battery, and It Says So

Battery Man filmed at Battersea Power Station, where EcoFlow launched its Stream 5000 series, and used the building to frame how domestic electricity used to work. Somebody generated it, the board delivered it, you took the price you were given. His argument is that the opportunity now lies in timing, storage and self generation, and that the barrier has always been owning a house and finding thousands of pounds up front.

The product complicates the plug-in story. He says the Stream 5000 holds 5 kilowatt hours with solar input built in, the AC version is storage only, and output runs to 3,000 watts, well past anything he expects a future plug-in rule to allow through a domestic socket. At around £1,500 before installation he argues it could still undercut a conventional battery fit. EcoFlow was direct on camera that this is not a plug-in battery, that it is designed for a qualified electrician and its own circuit under a G98 application, and that batteries are not included in the government's plug-in solar rules the company expects imminently.

His comparison is the electric scooter. Easy to buy, simple to use, and not permitted everywhere a buyer would reasonably assume.

Bottom line: The plug-in hybrid finding should settle an argument, and it will not. A car whose emissions depend on a nightly habit is a policy instrument that assumes the best about people, and the Shanghai figures suggest that assumption has a price. The products worth trusting today are the ones that remove the choice or measure it honestly. Aptera published its worst day alongside its best. EcoFlow said out loud that its battery needs an electrician. If you are buying anything this year, buy the version that still works on the days you forget about it.
