The most useful sentence on this page comes from a company update, which is not usually where you find one. In Aptera's production briefing, Chris and Steve describe the wall that every recent attempt at a genuinely new vehicle has run into: the distance between a vehicle that works and a vehicle that can be built ten thousand times over. Their response is worth noting because it is not the usual one. They did not announce a plan to learn manufacturing. They announced a partner who already knows how, a design-for-manufacturing firm the video says employs more than 3,000 people and runs a line capable of over 50,000 vehicles a year.

Once that distance has a name, it turns up in four of the five stories here. Heart Aerospace flew a full-scale electric airliner demonstrator this month, and the company's own published envelope for it is 2,000 feet above ground, 140 knots, 1.5G and a single pilot. That is not a criticism. It is what a demonstrator is for. Heart draws that line itself: the demonstrator exists to prove the capability, the 30-seat ES-30 is the aircraft it intends to sell, and the type certification date it lists for that aircraft is 2031. Five years sits between the aircraft that flew and the aircraft you could buy a seat on.

The 300ZX conversion is the same problem taken to its logical end. Electric Supercar's build is scan, print a test part, check the fit, cut it in steel, weld, repeat, across a custom front subframe, a custom rear suspension mount, an electric brake system and a set of wheels they drew themselves. The channel reports roughly 200 miles of range and a claimed 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. It is also, by construction, precisely one car, and the shop says the labor behind it grew from a garage into a building with employees.

At the other end, where volume is long since solved, the problem changes shape completely. Robert Llewellyn describes European car parks with more rapid chargers than drivers need and a UK charging price war that has pulled some rates down toward 40p a kilowatt hour. And then there is the Prologue, which nobody had any trouble building. Two of the largest manufacturers on the planet shared a platform, shipped it, and Gjeebs now finds 2024 examples listed under $20,000. Getting across the gap buys you a production line. It does not tell you what the thing on it is worth.

Two dates on this page can actually be checked later. Aptera says its first 40 production bodies and chassis arrive in October. Heart lists 2031 for ES-30 certification. Everything else here is capability, and capability has always been the easier half to demonstrate.


Heart's Electric Airliner Flew, and the Flight Envelope Is the Real Headline

Heart Aerospace has flown X1, a full-scale all-electric regional airliner demonstrator, from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York. The company describes it as the largest electric aircraft ever to fly and lists a 106 foot wingspan, 76 foot length, 24 foot height and a takeoff weight above 25,000 pounds. Heart says the aircraft holds an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate.

The numbers that matter most define what X1 is allowed to do. Heart's published envelope is 100 percent battery-electric propulsion, a never-exceed speed of 140 knots, a ceiling of 2,000 feet above ground level, a maximum maneuver load of 1.5G and one pilot on board. That is a deliberately narrow box, and the company is open about why. Its framing is that X1 exists to prove the full stack, from clean-sheet airframe design through structural and propulsion testing to flight test operations.

The product is the ES-30, which Heart specifies as a 30-seat hybrid-electric aircraft with 55 pounds of luggage per passenger, 125 miles of all-electric range, 500 miles on hybrid power, a 30 minute charge and type certification listed for 2031. Founder and chief executive Anders Forslund frames the pitch as fundamentally lower operating costs, and more frequent, more affordable flights from airports closer to where people live. Worth thinking through for any operator: a 125 mile electric leg with a half-hour turnaround is a route network constraint before it is a technical one.

A 1992 300ZX, Two Tesla Motors, and a Subframe That Had to Be Invented

We covered this car's range test earlier this month. The build recap explains the work behind it, and it is mostly fabrication. Electric Supercar reports fitting dual Model 3 Performance motors, keeping the complete Tesla subframe at the rear, and designing an entirely new one at the front because, as the host puts it, Tesla has only part of a front subframe and leans on the unibody for the rest. He calls that the hardest part of the build. Suspension points were tacked in place with the unibody still attached, then cut free for welding.

The pattern repeats across the car: scan the space, model it in CAD, print a test piece, then make the final part in steel. That covers the charge port in the old fuel filler location, the electric air conditioning compressor mount, a brake booster that required modifying the firewall, an electric steering rack, and wheels the shop designed after deciding Tesla's did not suit the car. The battery is split between the engine bay and the old rear seat area.

Finished weight is given as almost 3,900 pounds. On a range run up a canyon and back at 98 degrees with the air conditioning running, the channel reports around 200 miles, or 185 to 190 usable. The claim is all-wheel drive and 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

Aptera Ordered 40 Bodies and Bought Itself a Manufacturing Partner

Aptera says it has placed a purchase order for its first 40 production bodies and chassis, refined from what its engineering team learned on validation builds, with parts due in October. Chris and Steve describe these as the components that become the first customer vehicles, not another round of prototypes.

The larger item is a new strategic investor. Aptera says it has signed a partnership with Launch, described in the video as a design-for-manufacturing company with more than 3,000 employees, a pilot production facility where initial Aptera production and assembly fixtures will be developed, and a high-volume facility the video says can build over 50,000 vehicles a year, currently running a vehicle Launch designed in-house. The company puts the production program at up to approximately $44 million, with roughly $15 million of that coming from Launch in exchange for warrants for Aptera stock, and points to its press release and SEC filings for the structure.

Aptera says the two have worked together for over a year and that the last six months alone cut its projected bill of materials. The stated benefits are process engineers working on tooling and takt times now, supplier access at costs Aptera says it could not reach alone, and finished subassemblies shipped to Carlsbad rather than loose parts. Separately, Duke Reiter has joined the board as an independent director, described as a senior adviser to the president of Arizona State University.

Llewellyn on the Year the EV Market Stopped Being a Niche Argument

Robert Llewellyn joins Sam and Sarah with a read on where adoption has actually moved. The hosts put Australian battery-electric share consistently above 20 percent of new car sales, and cite roughly 43,000 EVs and about 27.5 percent share in the UK in July. Llewellyn's more interesting examples sit outside the usual map: he says just over 90 percent of new vehicles in Singapore are now electric, and describes adoption in Ethiopia as a grassroots response to insecure fuel imports rather than a government mandate.

Charging comes up as a solved problem in parts of Europe. Having driven a Polestar 3 across the continent, he says he repeatedly parked beside banks of rapid chargers without needing to plug in. Price is the remaining gap: he reports paying 29 cents a kilowatt hour at a Supercharger in southern France against UK rates he puts as high as 89 or 90 pence, with a domestic price war now pulling some down toward 40p.

The pricing comparison that will sting UK readers is the refreshed MG4, which Sarah quotes at just under A$40,000 drive away with 452 kilometres of range, a 64 kWh LFP pack and 153 kW DC charging. The hosts put the equivalent UK figure around £30,000 before taxes. Llewellyn gives the Everything Electric Sydney dates as 18 to 20 September at Olympic Park.

A $59,000 Sticker, and 2024 Prologues Listed Under $20,000

The Prologue is Honda's badge on GM engineering, and Gjeebs notes Honda states outright that it runs GM's Ultium battery technology, an 85 kWh pouch cell pack sharing its architecture with the Chevy Blazer EV. He gives list prices of $39,900 for the EX, $44,200 for the Touring and $50,400 for the Elite, with his all-wheel drive test car stickering at $59,000. He gives rated range as 283 miles in all-wheel drive and a little over 300 in front-wheel drive.

On a Phoenix to Sedona round trip in 107 degree heat, he reports covering 247.4 miles from a displayed 283 and finishing with 14 miles indicated, which he rates as close to the label. The uphill leg was less flattering: 123 miles driven consumed 160 miles of indicated range. The charging test ran into trouble. Three Walmart posts failed, and a Tesla V3 unit reached via adapter took 58 minutes 28 seconds for 10 to 80 percent, adding 202 miles. He notes Honda quotes 20 to 80 percent in 35 minutes, and says heat and the adapter may have derated the session, calling it a real-world rather than a controlled test.

The reason to care is the used market. From CarGurus listings he cites a 2024 car with 67,000 miles at $19,640 and a 2025 Touring all-wheel drive at $27,696.

Bottom line: Aptera did the smartest thing on this page, which was to admit out loud that manufacturing is a separate skill and go rent it. Watch October, because a purchase order is not a delivered part. Heart's demonstrator is a genuine achievement and 2031 is still a long way out, so treat the ES-30 spec sheet as an intention. And if you want a cheap electric crossover to run errands, a discounted Prologue looks like real value, provided road trips are somebody else's problem.
