Out of Spec Reviews spends most of a long video explaining why Tesla's point-to-point driver assistance has never worked better, then says he would like to pull the communications module out of the car so it can never update again. He is not joking, and repeats it at the end. His argument: the software is as unconstrained now as it will ever be allowed to be, and everything after this gets shaped by an incident, an insurer or a regulator.
That is a strange thing to want from a product whose whole premise is that it improves after you buy it. CNBC spent a separate video on the far end of the same idea. The upside is real: Tesla revised the Model 3's braking over the air after Consumer Reports withheld a recommendation, and the recommendation followed. The better question is when the improving stops and who decides. One executive sets the window at seven to ten years.
The sharpest illustration is Tesla's own, and CNBC lays out the sequence plainly. A 2016 statement that every car then in production had the hardware for full self-driving. Musk reaffirming Hardware 3 in 2019. Musk in 2026 saying it cannot achieve unsupervised FSD after all, with an upgrade or a discounted trade-in for qualifying customers. Nothing on those cars broke. The definition moved.
Two of today's stories describe the opposite arrangement. At Forest Lodge Orchard in Otago, the capital goes in once and the output arrives for decades. The owner puts his all-in solar cost near seven New Zealand cents a kilowatt hour, and nobody in that transaction has the standing to revise the number later. In Shanghai, End of S.T.A.Y. builds half-scale electric Porsches with a hydraulic handbrake and no traction control. Its name translates as a promise to still be there at the end.
The Electrifying podcast lands in between, arguing about door handles. That sounds trivial and is not. An electronic exterior handle needs a mechanical backup inside, so manufacturers fit two, and the second one exists purely because the first has a failure mode the old one did not. Jaguar has just shown a Type 01 cabin with almost everything in the screen.
The thing worth watching is not whether regulation arrives for driver assistance. Out of Spec expects it, and so does nearly everyone CNBC put on camera. It is what happens to residual values once the used market learns to ask which compute generation sits behind the dashboard. That question is on no window sticker and invisible on a test drive, yet it decides whether a six-year-old car is still the car it was sold as.
A Cherry Farm With No Diesel and the Spreadsheet to Prove It
Forest Lodge Orchard sits in Otago on New Zealand's South Island, six hectares of cherries on land that previously carried around 800 sheep. Mike, who runs it, tells Everything Electric he and his wife Rebecca bought the farm after he sold a Sydney technology company in 2019, planted 9,300 trees, and found a cherry operation needs roughly 21 machines. Going fully electric was not the plan. It took two or three years, because the diesel versions kept costing more to own.
The generation figures are the part worth writing down. He reports 160 kW of solar across ground arrays, warehouse and barn roofs and the house, producing about 200 MWh a year against consumption near 100 MWh, with 300 kWh of battery behind it. Counting panels, install and wiring, he puts the delivered price near seven New Zealand cents a kilowatt hour, against roughly 26 from the grid and around 80 on diesel. He values the saving at NZ$40,000 a year, the earnings of another 1,600 trees.
The tractor is a California prototype he says he talked a board into shipping across the Pacific, and he claims 55 electric horsepower matches a 90 horsepower diesel at roughly $2 an hour against $13 to $14. Frost fans still run overnight off the grid, leaving the farm 80 percent self-powered. We covered the industrial version of this logic in yesterday's edition.
The Software Car Has an End Date and Nobody Agrees Where
CNBC's question is simple and awkward: how long does a car last when the car is mostly software? The piece documents the upside first. Over-the-air updates let Tesla revise the Model 3's braking after Consumer Reports declined to recommend it, and the recommendation followed. Rivian has used the same route to add drive modes, change ride quality and introduce an AI assistant.
The complication, the video notes, is that the average vehicle on American roads is close to 13 years old, a record, and plenty run longer. Silicon does not age on that schedule. CNBC's example is Tesla: a 2016 statement that cars then in production had the hardware for full self-driving, Musk reaffirming Hardware 3 in 2019, and Musk in 2026 saying it cannot deliver unsupervised FSD. The video reports qualifying customers were offered a hardware upgrade or a discounted trade-in.
An executive interviewed commits to seven to ten years of new features, based on average US ownership duration, and stresses the car stays fully functional and keeps safety updates afterwards. He says a coming release will unlock a service menu so owners can run diagnostics and do basic repairs, framed against right to repair rules. For used buyers that adds a question alongside mileage: which compute generation is in it.
Jaguar Shows the Type 01 Cabin, and the Podcast Wants Buttons
Jaguar has released the first interior images of the Type 01, and the Kilowatt Half Hour team spend a good chunk of episode 120 on them. A presenter who has seen the car describes a minimal, almost Scandinavian cabin, praises the materials and the steering wheel, and admits to being unsure about how little of it is physical. Jaguar has confirmed the full reveal for 6 October in New York, and the central spine runs the length of the cabin, splitting it into four seats.
Their reservations are specific: seats that appear to lack bolstering, uncertain elbow room around that spine, and steering wheel controls they suspect are haptic. That feeds a longer complaint about door handles. An electronic handle needs a mechanical backup inside, so you fit two, and they report Volkswagen's Thomas Schaefer returns sketches containing pop-out handles.
The other headline is Omoda and Jaecoo passing 100,000 UK sales, which the presenters put down to price and equipment. Both brands sit under Chery. Omoda launched in Britain at the end of August 2024, Jaecoo followed in January 2025, and their combined share of new registrations is now close to 5.7 percent, which is the figure worth quoting rather than the rounder one used on the show.
The Argument That Rules Will Ruin FSD Is Also an Admission
Out of Spec Reviews makes an unusually candid case: point-to-point driver assistance is at its best now largely because so little governs it. He notes liability sits with him rather than Tesla, which on his reading is why the car moves with the flow of traffic instead of pinning itself to the posted limit, and why an assertive lane-changing mode ships at all.
He is equally direct about driver monitoring, which he argues Tesla has deliberately kept lax. He describes closing his eyes for around 15 minutes on the highway, with a passenger watching the road, without the car objecting, notes the same test does warn people wearing certain glasses, and says plainly he is not recommending it. He also reports the system taking him into a bus lane exit and parking in a disabled bay.
His forecast is incident-driven regulation first, then insurers, then lobbying from makers without a competitive system of their own. He expects these systems to change character once liability shifts from driver to manufacturer, the same handover CNBC circles in story two. He ends by saying he would buy a car on the current build and never update it again.
Half Scale, 35 Horsepower, and Entirely Serious
Hagerty's Capturing Car Culture visits End of S.T.A.Y. in Shanghai, a studio building what co-founder Philip calls high performance junior cars: half-scale electric versions of a Porsche 964, a Defender, an MX-5 and an AE86, at true proportions and aimed at adults. He says the category exists partly because access to the originals was limited, claiming fewer than ten 964s officially entered China.
These are not converted go-karts and he is insistent on it. The studio designed its own chassis and holds a design patent, uses a stainless steel frame with aluminium panels on the Defender, and developed its own tyre. He describes disc brakes, a hydraulic handbrake locking the rear axle, adjustable suspension and liquid cooling, and quotes 45 brake horsepower for the top version, 35 for the high performance, 140 km/h and just under 200 kg.
He gives prices from $8,800 for the standard 964 and $10,800 for the performance version, with the MX-5 and AE86 from around $7,000 and the ultimate spec above both. Lead time is four to six weeks, and the R&D was funded by selling a Ferrari 250 GTO replica the founders built for themselves. There is no traction control, and Philip says driver assistance is at most a later addition. The name translates as a promise to still be around later.
Bottom line: The most revealing sentence today came from a man who loves his Tesla and wants to disconnect it from the internet. If the best version of a software-defined car is the one you freeze, the industry has a problem it has not priced in. Buy one for what it does on the forecourt, not for what is promised on the roadmap, and treat the compute generation as a spec rather than trivia. If you want the thing still working in 2040, today's answer was a solar array and a half-scale Porsche with a hydraulic handbrake.
