Every story today has a big number in it, and in none of them is the big number what decides the outcome. Delivery decides it: how much of that capacity reaches the road, the wheel or the wall socket at the moment you need it.

Start with the clearest case. An 80 amp circuit is more than enough for a 48 amp charger, and it still ended in a fire inside a metal junction box, which the electrician on site puts down to a single splice that was not torqued properly. Capacity was never short. Delivery through one connection was. The same shape shows up in a rallycross paddock, where a stock Ioniq 5 XRT ran 61.8 seconds and then went flat below 40 percent state of charge. The pack still held energy. It just stopped handing it over at the rate the driver wanted.

Janus Electric has built an entire business model on the same insight from the other direction. Its converted trucks swap packs in about four minutes rather than charging fast, which sidesteps the grid connection problem by moving the energy transfer into a container that trickles overnight on an ordinary feed. Nobody built a bigger battery. They rearranged where it gets filled. Mercedes chases the same goal by spending less: Autogefühl measured the electric C-Class at 15 kWh per 100 km, rising only to 16.5 at 120 km/h, thanks to a two speed gearbox and suspension that drops the body at speed. A quoted 630 km comes from restraint, not from a headline battery figure.

Even the Ford and Geely partnership fits. Ford has the brand, the dealer network and the factory in Valencia. What it lacks, on Andy Palmer's reading, is the ability to turn any of that into a competitive electric car on its own schedule, so it is renting delivery from someone who can.

What to watch over the next six months is which companies stop advertising capacity and start advertising throughput: swap times, sustained power at low state of charge, real consumption at motorway speed, how a charger behaves on hour four rather than minute one. All harder to print on a spec sheet than a kilowatt hour figure, and all closer to what owners experience.

Bottom line: The winners are the buyers who ask the second question: how fast can it give the energy back, for how long, and through what. By that measure a converted diesel with swappable packs and a 15 kWh per 100 km sedan are doing the same clever thing, and a perfectly adequate 80 amp circuit with one bad splice is the cautionary tale tying them together. Buy the throughput, not the badge number.
