Somewhere in the last two years the industry quietly cleared its original bar. Autogefühl spent hours comparing four premium electric SUVs and could not find a bad one. The verdict came down to seat cushioning and whether a car had air suspension. That is not a review of immature technology. That is a review of a mature segment, where the engineering argument has been settled and the remaining differences are the kind you only notice on the third hour of a drive.

Which raises a harder question: if building a competent electric car is close to solved, what actually separates them now? Today's stories answer it four different ways, and none of the answers is about acceleration. Rivian's approach, laid out in State of Charge's full charging analysis, was to stay on a 400 volt architecture and push current instead, protecting the price of the car and accepting a curve that, by the channel's measurements, slows sharply above 80 percent. Tesla's answer, in the Model Y L tour, is a revised thermal manifold and a coating on the glass. Neither shows up in a brochure. Both change what the car is like to live with.

Lexus offers the counterexample. The new ES 350e is beautifully made and, by Electrifying's account, priced against rivals that charge roughly twice as fast. Quality of construction was the thing Lexus always won on. It turns out that is no longer the category being scored.

Then there is the story that should worry people most. Rich Rebuilds' salvage Lucid investigation features a car with straight frame rails and cosmetic damage that reportedly cannot be returned to normal operation because the manufacturer says a full re-shell is mandatory. Whatever the merits of that specific dispute, it points at something new. Every other variable on this list is decided when the car is designed. This one is decided after you own it, and it can be changed without your involvement.

What to watch over the next six months is whether buyers start pricing that in. Efficiency figures and charging curves are now easy to find and reasonably trustworthy. Repair access and software policy are neither. As these cars age into second and third ownership, which is where most vehicles spend most of their lives, the brands that made repair straightforward will look very different from the ones that did not.

Bottom line: The spec sheet has stopped being the interesting document. The warranty terms, the repair policy and the charging curve past 80 percent are where the money and the frustration actually live. Manufacturers have gotten very good at building electric cars. Some of them are still deciding whether you get to keep yours working.
