Out of Spec Roaming ran BMW's new iX3 50 xDrive through a road trip test built around a single question: how far can you get on a 15 minute charge? The format, which the host calls the Nordic 10 percent challenge, is simple. Arrive at a charger at 10 percent with the pack preconditioned, plug in for exactly 15 minutes, then drive at a GPS verified 120 km/h until the car is back at 10 percent. The car carries what the video describes as a 108 kWh usable pack, 114 kWh gross, with 400 kW charging, an externally excited synchronous motor at the rear and an asynchronous motor at the front. Run at night on dry pavement at around 15 degrees Celsius, the answer came out at 238 km.
Fifteen minutes is the number that matters on a long drive, and this format isolates something a WLTP figure cannot: the shape of the charging curve at the states of charge you actually use. It is also a fair way to compare architectures. XPENG's newly launched L03, according to Forbes, runs a 400 volt system topping out at 236 kW that does 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes, and the company's e-powertrain vice president told the publication that pushing peak charging speeds higher is now producing diminishing returns for customers. BMW is making the opposite bet: a very large pack and a very high peak. For a buyer, the question is which bet your route rewards. If your regular chargers are 150 kW units, most of the iX3's advantage disappears into the cable. If you are on 350 kW hardware or faster, this test is much closer to your reality.
The charging session is the standout. The video reports the car pulling 401 kW, reaching 14 percent within about a minute of plugging in, still holding 254 kW at 39 percent, and dropping below 200 kW at 52 percent. Fifteen minutes took it to 65 percent. On the drive, the host notes early efficiency readings above 30 kWh per 100 km before the running average settled, finishing at 24.2 kWh per 100 km over 238.3 km, which he rounds down to 238. He also flags that the car attributed about 6 percent of consumption to battery preconditioning, with pack temperature at 60 degrees Celsius leaving the charger and 45 degrees later in the run, and that he deliberately triggered preconditioning for the return leg to keep the test true to a real road trip. Extrapolated across the full usable pack, he calculates 469 km, which he says is well short of the WLTP number. He places the result behind the Zeekr and XPENG entries he has run through the same test, and ahead of a Tesla Model Y. Method notes matter in a test like this, and he lists them: comfort mode because it is the car's default, B mode by personal preference, climate set to 21 degrees, and a looped route so the start and finish sit at a similar altitude. At the halfway turnaround he was at 43 percent with 92 km covered and a running average of 25.6 kWh per 100 km, which is the clearest illustration of how much the first few kilometers distort an efficiency figure.
Bottom line: 238 km from a quarter hour plugged in is genuinely good, and it is the figure to quote at anyone still claiming an EV road trip means an hour standing around. The more interesting gap is between the 469 km extrapolation and the WLTP claim, which is the usual reminder that a homologation cycle and a sustained 120 km/h are different worlds. If BMW's sixth generation hardware holds this up across the range, the company has answered the charging question convincingly. Whether it has answered the price question is a separate test, and one nobody has run yet.
