A Rivian R1T is now wearing City of Atlanta Fire Department markings, and the walkthrough of how it got there is more interesting than the badge. Brian from EV Sportline, filming at the company's PatrolEV upfitting division, takes the truck apart piece by piece: steel wheels, aluminium running boards, a Gamber Johnson brush bar, a T-slotted bed rack with a lockable box for backboards, a full Federal Signal light and siren package, a Motorola radio, a laptop mount and a custom centre console. The finished vehicle is a medical first responder advanced life support unit. For anyone who has worked out of one, the video says, it should all feel familiar. The only difference is that it happens to be an EV.

The case for municipal EVs made in the video is a maintenance one. No oil changes, no engine maintenance, brakes that last longer, and no fuel burned while idling at a scene, which Brian frames as a higher capital cost up front against savings across the life of the truck. That is the standard fleet argument and it is the easy half. The video puts no numbers on any of it, and it does not touch the questions a fleet manager asks second: what the truck costs once the upfit is paid for, how much range the added weight and the constant draw of a full lighting package take out of a shift, and where it charges between calls. Idling is where a first-response vehicle spends a large share of its life, and idling is exactly where an EV is strongest, so the logic is sound on its face. It is simply not demonstrated here.

The genuinely useful section is about power. Brian says EVs do not arrive with a 12 volt source suitable for running lights, radios and sirens, so EV Sportline built an auxiliary power unit that bolts in and draws from the Rivian without disturbing the factory electrical architecture. He says it was deliberately kept independent, so that an over-the-air update or the vehicle powering down does not create an obsolescence risk, and that the company worked with Rivian directly to make sure the approach was compliant with how Rivian wanted the equipment powered. The rest is packaging, and it is smart packaging. The flip-up rear seats become the equipment bay for the wiring and power hardware. The wheels are Team 1EV steel wheels made specifically for the R1T and R1S, chosen because municipal fleets rarely run factory alloys and steel is easier to live with. Every connection, he says, is soldered and shrink wrapped so nothing works loose.

What makes the build worth watching is that almost none of it is off the shelf. The bed rack, the crossbar and the lockable backboard box were engineered for this truck by PatrolEV and EV Sportline's own engineers, and Brian presents the T-slotted rack as an open platform: whatever a department can think of, he says, they can build. The aluminium running boards are the company's own, dropped slightly, with an LED light bar running along the side above them. Lighting is surface-mounted throughout, at the front, along the sides, across the rear and up on the bed rack, feeding off the same auxiliary system. PatrolEV is the upfitting arm serving both EV Sportline and T Sportline, and the video's closing pitch is that a department can specify a use case and have hardware engineered around it, with contact through patrolev.com. That is a claim about capability rather than a demonstrated one, but the R1T is a reasonable showcase for it: flip-up rear seats that hide the hardware, a lockable box for the backboards, and an auxiliary system that takes its scene power from the truck itself rather than a second battery.

Bottom line: this is the part of EV adoption nobody films. Fleets do not switch because a truck is quick. They switch when the boring things exist: a 12 volt supply that will not stop working after a software update, a bed rack that fits, a wheel that survives a kerb. An aftermarket is solving that ahead of the manufacturers, and every problem it solves makes the next department's decision cheaper and less frightening. Atlanta gets the headline.
