Range tests usually involve one person, no luggage and the climate control switched off, which is not how anyone actually uses a truck. Outsider Reviews ran the other version. A Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck with the extended range battery, not the largest one offered, was loaded with a family of three, two dogs, cargo, and a mountain bike on the return leg, with climate control running at both ends of the cabin the whole way. The video reports 642.7 km covered, arriving home with 5 percent showing, at an average of roughly 3.7 to 3.8 km per kWh. The host notes he had previously seen 693 km in mixed daily driving against an on board estimate of 682 km, which makes this highway run the harder of the two tests.

Two things make this more useful than the usual number. The first is the load. Rear climate vents, a full cabin and a loaded bed all draw energy that solo range tests never account for, and the gap between the two styles of test is the gap owners notice in their first month. The second is the disagreement between the two range predictions sitting in front of the driver. The instrument cluster works from recent consumption, while the navigation system works from the route itself, the elevation profile and the weather, and in this drive the two did not converge until late. For anyone deciding whether to stop and charge, that difference is the whole decision. A driver who trusts the cluster before a long climb can end up charging when there was no need, or skipping a stop when there was. Any buyer comparing electric trucks should ask which of those two predictions the vehicle uses when it plans a route.

Smaller details fill in the picture. The host says he remote started the truck to cool the cabin before loading, repeatedly, and did not adjust his driving to protect the result. He also notes the battery percentage read two points higher after sitting overnight, which he puts down to the pack settling and recalibrating rather than any gain in energy.

Bottom line: 642 km of loaded highway driving with the climate on for two dogs is a genuinely useful number, and it is better than the assumption most truck buyers are carrying around. The catch is the one the host keeps returning to. The truck's own range display and the route aware estimate tell you different things, and only one of them knows about the mountain you live on. Buy the truck for the range if you like, but plan with the navigation figure, because it is the only one of the two that knew the route before the drive started. A dashboard that flatters itself is a worse problem than a battery that is slightly too small.
