RivianTrackr host Jose drove his new R2 Performance Launch Edition home the long way, roughly 2,500 miles from Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois down to Orlando, Florida, and used the trip to sort the good from the annoying. Most of the drive was highway, and he says the majority of it was done on Rivian's Universal Hands-Free system, which he calls close to flawless on the interstate. Noise, vibration and harshness impressed him too: he reports the wind noise that dogged his R1 vehicles is simply gone in the R2, and nothing rattled after the car was put through hard testing with another crew. After all those miles, he says the only genuine defect he found was mechanical, not electronic, and it is a small one.
That single defect is a plastic cover over the rear doors' manual door-release, which Jose says pops loose on both rear doors when a door is shut. It is worth putting in context. Electronic door handles like the R2's are required by regulation to have a mechanical backup, so the trim that keeps rattling loose sits right on top of a safety-critical release, which is why he plans to leave it fully accessible rather than tape it shut. He says he restarted the vehicle roughly once a day and that most glitches cleared. His sharpest complaint is range estimation. On the final leg he says the car promised arrival with a 5 percent buffer, then watched that buffer evaporate as he neared home, and he pulled in at zero percent without the navigation ever suggesting an extra charging stop. He also flags a quirk several owners have noted: the steering wheel gently vibrates between 60 and 70 mph, but only with hands-free engaged, which he suspects is a software behaviour rather than a fault.
On the drive itself, Jose rates the R2 highly against his own Rivians. He says it feels more planted than his R1S, which he attributes to the shorter wheelbase, and praises the semi-active dampers in their soft setting. He runs 20-inch all-terrain tyres and acknowledges they cost some range compared with the more efficient 21-inch setup, a trade he says is worth it for ride and looks. He also credits Rivian's charging, calling the R2 the fastest 400-volt car he knows of right now, though that is his characterisation rather than a measured claim. If you want a three-row you can skip, the R2 looks like a genuinely better use of space than a Model Y. Just treat the early software as a work in progress, and wait for the cheaper standard version if you can.
